Black Thumbnails iPhoto imports

Scanned photos (JPEG format) imported into iPhoto produce black thumbnails.
I have to change the scan format to TIFF to obtain normal color thumbnails.

What is the problem?

iPhoto won't create thumbnails for images that have thumbnails. Your scanner software or whatever your using for importing your images is not making a thumbnail. You can rebuild your entire iPhoto Library of Thumbnails (Close iPhoto and start it by Command-Option-clicking it) and choosing the first two options, I believe.

This will take awhile.

Optionally, you may try to update the thumbnails of the files before you import them into iPhoto. Seems like there is a way to do this in the Finder, but I know a free graphic application Graphic Converter will create thumbnails for images.
