iTunes quits when I try to rip a CD

When I try to rip a music CD my itunes quits itself without user action. It will copy one file on average and start on another before shutting down. I tried to uninstall it and reinstall, but it didn't fix the problem. Is this maybe an OS problem or a bug in the new version of Itunes?

I'm running Mac OS X 10.4.11
Itunes 7.6.2 (9)
