Parallels internet connection

I'm using Parallels on my iMac to run Windows XP. I have AVG free anti-virus running on the Windows side and it can't find an internet connection to update the anti-virus files. How do I fix this?

How are you sharing the connection? If you can access the internet with bridged or NAT mode, it should recognize that there is a net connection.
Can the other programs reach the net? Do you have firewall on that guest?
