Angry HELP!!-cd player gone!!!!!

When I open sys. prefs. the cd/dvd player icon is gone. I have a dvd player in my apps. folder but no cd player. When i open the cd/dvd slot tray and put a cd installer cd in it; it will close and after aboutr 5-10 seconds it will open back up. i can't install anything. I have used " find; spotlight; time machine" ; etc. but I don't find a cd player or a cd/dvd player icon to restore.
HELP !

Have you repaired permissions and run a repair on the hard drive?

Question Cd player gone!

NIXGEEK-What if I do a stand alone download and install of leopard 10.5.4? do you think it will put a cd/dvd player back in the system preferences and work? Thanks ahead!

Does it work at all with any other disc?

Is the optical drive showing up at all in System Profiler?

Is there anything in the logs that would point to a faulty optical drive?

Last resort, have you thought about doing an Archive & Install to see if this resolves the problem? Again, this would be a last resort.

Sounds like the optical drive might have gone belly-up IMO.

Before you go Archiving & Installing or anything drastic, try deleting the cache for the System Preferences icons... close System Preferences, then:

1) Navigate to your User folder
2) Navigate to Library
3) Navigate to Caches
4) Delete com.apple.preferencepanes.cache

Re-launch System Preferences and see if the icon returns.
