Saving Indesign CS3 files over CS2 versi

CS3 adds the file extension .INDD, and therefore will not replace the CS2 version of the document that does not contain the suffix. How do I save Indesign CS3 documents without the file extension so saving will replace the CS2 file? MAC 10.4.11

Do a "Save As" and manually remove the extension from the filename, and replace the old CS2 document.

Subsequent "Save" commands will then save over the file, never appending an extension.

I can't find a preference in InDesign to suppress the addition of file extensions, so that's the best workaround I can come up with.
