Attachments in Thunderbird and Firefox

I use Thunderbird for my email and Firefox for my browsing. For both Thunderbird and Firefox I have them asking me where to save files that I download. I have also changed in Safari, even though I do not use this, to save downloaded files in a temp directory I created. However, whenever I open an attachment in Thunderbird it saves a copy of this file to my Downloads directory. Any ideas on how I can resolve this...? This is getting very frustrating....

Oops sorry but forgot to add my specs:

Macbook Pro
OSX Leopard 10.5.4
Firefox 3.0.1
Thunderbird 2.0.0.16

Hope this will help...
