Panther Print Preview

When you preview a document to be printed in Panther (when you select Preview rather than Print), it will create a preview document in Preview.app. This is great, however, there is an option checkbox within the generated preview titled 'Soft Proof'... so, what is this? I unchecked it, and nothing seemed to happen?
