Angry Panther can't see my HP 300i DVD+R

I have a Hewlett-Packard 300i DVD+R drive in my blue and white G3. Now, under system 10.1.5, the DVD player worked fine, started right up everytime I inserted a DVD, and I had no problem recording DVD's using Toast (although 10.1.5 would't allow me to burn using iTunes and my foreign drive).
But when I tried to install Panther, the OS couldn't seem to see my drive at all! I couldn't install the new OS, because the computer wouldn't restart from the Installation CD, which is required for the install. I had to swap out the HP and put back the original Apple drive to install the software.
Unfortunately, the original drive wasn't a DVD, just a CD-ROM. So I guess that since the new OS didn't "see" a DVD drive installed, it didn't install the DVD player.
Under the system profile in Panther, it says that the HP 300i drive is supported.
How do I get the DVD player to install, either using my HP drive or the original apple CD-ROM drive? Is the DVD player available from Apple as a download?

Go to http://www.versiontracker.com and get Pacifist. Use that to extract the DVD player from the OS CD. No need to boot from that CD to do this.
