Remote Desktop and VNC

I'm trying to access my Windows PC, which has realVNC installed, from Apple Remote Desktop 2 which is installed on my Mac. When I go to File > Add By Address on the Mac and type the IP of the Windows machine and VNC password (there is no username), I get an error verifying it. When I try to access the Mac from realVNC on the pc, I get an "Unknown Security Type" error. Both are on port 5900. What am I doing wrong? If I use Chicken of the VNC on the Mac, I can access the Windows PC, and if I use OSXvnc I can see the Mac from Windows, so the problem seems to be specifically with Apple Remote Desktop.

I did that before posting. There's nothing in the Help for ARD that explains how to use it with VNC other than that you need to enable a setting in the Sharing pane of System Preferences in order to allow the VNC side to connect to ARD, which I have enabled. The problem seems to be that realVNC doesn't understand the security type that Apple Remote Desktop uses, and vice versa.
