Crashed Hard Drive w/ Diskwarrior

I have several Lacie D2 firewire hard drives. One of them (160GB; 140GB used) recently crashed and the computer (dual G4) running OS 10.3.6 says it wants to initialize it. I bought DiskWarrior 3 online to try and rebuild the directory. It's been running for 7 hours. Is that normal? My first attempt was to use Disk Utility which said a number of files were overlapping but it couldn't continue and stopped.

Has anyone experienced something like this before where Disk Warrior runs for hours?

Thanks
J.

DiskWarrior can take a long time with large drives. Don't stop it. Hopefully, it will repair the drive for you.

After 8 hours, its still going but it has a message about 2 overlaps files. It's still going so hopefully thats good news so far.

Anyone have an idea what overlapped files are? My understanding is that perhaps those 2 files have data which were stored on the same sectors. Would one file be recoverable and the other lost?

Thanks
J.

Overlapped files are files ovelapping another file, causing problems like this.
I've seen reports of DW running for days before completeing.
If your drive is more than 85% full, you can have this happen, also if the disk is severely fragmented.

How can a MacOS disk be severly fragmented, I thought Apple solved this problem with 10.2 or 10.3 ?

If Apple solved it, they wouldn't have made automatic defrag of 20Mb files or less.
I'm not saying an OS X disk can become severely fragmented, I would think unlikely, but anything's possible.
