Microsoft Remote Desktop Connection question

My brother recently tried connecting to his computer using this program on mine. His computer runs XP and does have remote access turned on. However, the network in his apartment is set up differently, and the port for traffic is different than that of what the program uses. We tried putting a colon at the end of the IP address and then typing the port number, but that didn't work. Is there any way to specify the port number in the program?
