Internet Connect Problem

I'm having a weird problem changing networks

I have macbook pro 2.0
Mac OSX 10.4.8

I have 2 networks I bounce back and forth(home and office) 1 is wireless and the other is wired(ethernet.) I use static IP's for all my computers so I have a location set up in Network that is set up manually. All works great.

The trouble is when I switch to Automatic and have the dhcp server set up my ip and dns(public wifi's and such) Internet Connect says I'm connected to xyz network, I have signal strength, and a base station ID.

I also get a IP number, subnet mask and router IP.

But when I connect using either firefox, safari or mail, It says I'm not connected?

try the dianostics... but no avail.

I can't even hook up to my home or office network using dhcp.

Internet connect says I connected, I have signal strength, and Base ID number.
I even have ip address assigned, subnet mask and router Ip address...but when I connect using firefox, safari or mail...nothing. I says "cannot connect to page **** because you're not connected to the internet??

If I switch back to manually, all is fine again.

I sure would like to use public hotspots when I on the road, but can't seem to get around this???

Can anyone help???

Thanks

John

It is hard to say from a distance, but take in mind that there is a difference between the network connection and the internet connection.

In general they are equal, but it is quite well posiible to have a network connection active, while the internet connection goes through a different channel (like in the old days by dial up) r in the modern days (INTERNET by WiFi, NETWORK by cable).

So make sure that the connection the INTERNET software uses is set to the ACTIVE network connection.

Also if you select static settings, are the DNS settings filled in by HAND ?

Thx, Kees

I'm having the same problem with my girlfriends iBook using 10.4.8. The airport finds the network, gets an IP and everything else but applications can't connect to the internet. I have my PowerBook using 10.4.9 right beside it and have no difficulty connecting to a public wireless network. Did you ever find a solution? I'm hoping an update to 10.4.9 will solve the problem.

Thanks,

Neil

Does the system get a DNS ip-number (or 2 or 3). Trye to ping (www.apple.com) something on the internet. If that fails, try ping APPLEs ip-number (look at next line).

PING www.apple.com.akadns.net (17.112.152.32): 56 data bytes
64 bytes from 17.112.152.32: icmp_seq=0 ttl=236 time=171.227 ms

If ping to the ip-number works, it should be an dns problem. Also you can try accessing a different wireless network and check out of that one works well. Try working with a cable connection. Disable all NETWORK options except the AIRPORT option (to be 100% sure that it will use AIRPORT for internet access).

Good luck, kees
