Unhappy HELP ME: auto update tells me im not connected to the internet!!!

im using an ethernet internet connection at a university and whenever i try and auto update in mac os X it tells me im not connected 2 the inernet when i am. Internet explorer works fine on the net but other programs (such as auto update, limewire, acquisition, itunes) dont recognise that im connected. i only recently installed os x and upgraded to 10.2.6. Limewire in os 9 seemed 2 work ok on the university line so im wondering why limewire on os X doesnt even try and connect to peers. i have no idea what could b the problem: proxy settings, university firewall, internet configuration??? any ideas would b appreciated
