failure to logon to remote desktop client for mac

Hi, I am trying to use my Macbook to connect to my old windows machine which is running xp pro sp1 using the remote desktop client. It seems like there should be no problem making this work. I enter the ip into the client, enter a valid user name and password but the error message I keep getting is,

"The system could not log you on. Make sure your User name and domain are correct, then type your password again. Letters in passwords must be typed using the correct case."

Now I know that the user name and password are correct because I tried it a million ways, even resetting the password to something new but nothing works.

I tried googling around for people who had similar issues but couldn't seem to phrase my problem in such a way as to get the right info.

Can anyone help with this issue?

Are you connecting through a router? If so, make sure that "port forwarding" is enabled for port 3389. Disable any firewalls on the Windows machine for testing as well. You can re-enable the firewalls after opening port 3389.

Hey. I screwed around with the port forwarding for a long while and finally got it to work though I'm not sure which tweak actually fixed it in the end. Thanks for the help. Now my computers are friends and that makes me happy.
