secondary ftp question

when remote users log into ftp and start downloading (my ftp server is all on my 120 gig firewire drive) it REALLY distorts the sound of my computer. do you think this is a problem with A) the ftp software B) the fact that all the info is on the firewire drive ?

i'm on a 667 mhz titanium 512 30 gig

anyone else experienced this? i used to have a desktop with mac osx server (my titanium just runs 10.1.5 client) with all the info stored on an internal drive and i didnt have this problem.

thanks
