Description:
First Question : Can I install SYSTEM 8.1 and still use the basic programs such as Claris Works, Quicken, Netscape Navigator and last but the one I'm worried about is Norton Utilities 3.5 .

Problem another volunteer worked with me off and on for over a month to try to solve this problem. If I'm using netscape Navigator 3.0 and I quit the program and do anything else if I come back and try to open it I always get a crash and an error message, then I have to restart. That is why I'm thinking of buying system 8.1, although I can't afford it.
Thanks much.//DV

David,
My name is Cheryl and you have come to the right place. First, Netscape 3.0 is a memory hog. Even when you quit the application it still holds on to the memory. You could upgrade to Netscape 4.04. It runs smoother. Or you can get the Shareware MacOSPurge. That will force your quit applications to release the memory it once held while you were working on it. You can get that from

Second, yes you can upgrade to OS8 with no problem and still run ClarisWorks 3.0, Quicken and Netscape. Some programs do have minor updates that you can download from the web. Or you can invest in Claris 4.04 or Claris Office. and I do know that Quicken has an upgraded version also. Norton Disk Doctor 3.5 (and there are upgrades on their web site to 3.5.3) will work on OS8 AS LONG AS you do not use the HFS+ format. Use the standard format and you will love the decision to move to OS8.
Bottom line.... Get Netscape 4.04. Then decide about OS8... You can download 4.04 from Netscape's home page, or from the MacAddict CD that comes with every magazine.
Keep me posted.
Cheryl
