My system is crashing randomly. It will run fine for hours, then opening various applications either freezes on a black screen or on the desktop and the mouse does not respond. As well, Force quit appears to be disabled when this happens. My only option is to turn off my machine. Only recent activities would be the installation of the version of Azureus.
I ran a Norton antivirus check, no viruses. I don't know what to do!!!!
Please, anyone.

Hi Andrew

First get rid of Nortons from your system. See if the disk has an uninstall, otherwise, trash the app and search for Nortons and trash it. It can cause a lot of problems, and there are no viruses for OS X.

Then trash Azureus and look to see if it has any other files in the user>library>application support - and - user>library>preferences.

Next, open Disk Utility in your Utility folder and run Repair Permissions.
Next, boot off your OS CD, after the Installer window appears, go up to the Utility Menu to Disk Utility and run Repair Disk. If it finds any errors, run it again until it finds no errors.

Reboot normally and see how it runs.

Thanks Bob.

I have a feeling that this is a very serious problem because of how mysterious it is. I trashed Azureus, and I actually already booted of the OSX install DVD. I did verify disk permissions, there was nothing wrong, I repaired anyway, and it still said there was nothing wrong to begin with. I restarted my mac but the problem still persisted.

Right now I have left it on all day (8 hours), and it seems to be running fine. However, I have a feeling that it will not last. Technically there was no detectable problem.

Related to the same issue, I don't know how to describe it but i will try. When I'm reading text, there appear to be 'pixel trails' , almost like pixels are cut out, so on a white background, I might see misc. pixels of different colours out of place, almost 'streaked' across my screen. Then when I highlight them with the mouse, the text returns to normal.

I'm worried because there's nothing specifically that freezes my machine. It's usually when I open an App or when I'm downloading. The other day, I was watching a movie using VLC, and right at the very end, it froze, but the sound kept coming through. My Mac froze and I had to turn it off.

What do you think?

Sorry Bob, forgot one other note.
When the system freezes on an Application, the force quite feature does not work.

thanks again

Andrew

Create another user on the system and log into that and see if the problems are still there, especially the pixel problem.

Hi Bob:

Guess what, My ATI Radeon 9800(Mac Edition) was part of the problem. I put in my old NVdia and now it seems to be working fine. I've only had one system crash (2 days ago) when using VLC to watch and AVI. Would explain crashing in 2 games. Seems stable for now, no pixel problems. We'll see what happens now.
Thanks for your help
