I have just bought a brand new Intel iMac for college. I was setting up my Lexmark P707 printer and discovered there were no pre-loaded utilities (for ink meter, cleaning ink head, ect...) on the computer. I went to Lexmark's website to download this utility. After a normal instillation I try and open the utility but was unable to open in and just got the beach ball icon. I restart(with no problem) and upon start-up I get a message saying something needs repairing and it asks me if I want to fix it. I fix it and the Utility works.
Later I am done with my computer and want to shut down, upon shutting down I go to a grey screen and get a circle which never goes away and does not allow me to shut down. This happens on restart too.
I've tried Uninstalling lexmark drivers and p-700 utility with included uninstaller, repairing permissions ten times, using Mac OS X DVD installer's disk utility to repair disk, booting in Safe mode, deleting system cache, searching for corrupted preferences but to no avail. Sometimes when I do one if these things it shutdowns/restarts normally but after I try to shutdown/restart again problem persists. I am totally stumped.
Help?

Hi,
here is some tips you could try, if these doesn't work you might want to get in touch with your dealer as you still have guaranteee for you mac. But lets hope you'll get it fixed!
First some questions: have you installed anything else on your mac at the time the problem started? Have you tried booting with all the peripherials unplugged?
Then you could try to reset the system management controller (SMC) here some info how to do it:
The System Management Controller (SMC) is a chip on the logic board that controls all power
functions for your computer. If your computer is experiencing any power issue, resetting the SMC
may resolve it. The SMC controls several functions, including:
Telling the computer when to turn on, turn off, sleep, wake, idle, and so forth.
Handling system resets from various commands.
Controlling the fans.
Note that resetting the SMC does not reset the PRAM. Resetting the SMC will not resolve issues
in which your computer is unresponsive—in these situations, restarting your computer will
generally suffice. If your computer isn’t responding, perform these steps one at a time, in this
order, until the issue has been resolved:
Force Quit (Option-Command-Escape).
Restart (Control-Command-Power).
Force Shut Down (press the power button for 10 seconds).
Resetting the SMC can resolve some computer issues such as not starting up, not displaying
video, sleep issues, fan noise issues, and so forth. If your computer still exhibits these types of
issues after you’ve restarted the computer, try resetting the SMC.
To reset the SMC on an iMac (Early 2006):
From the Apple menu, choose Shut Down (or if the computer is not responding, hold the
power button until it turns off).
Unplug all cables from the computer, including the power cord.
Wait at least 15 seconds.
Plug the power cord back in, making sure the power button is not being pressed at the time.
Then reconnect your keyboard and mouse to the computer.
Press the power button on the back to start up your computer.
If nothing wors you can try to do archive and install from your tiger dvd, this is quite safe as it does not delete your mails, address book contacts and most of the programs (even3rd party) work perfect after install, so it does not erase your hard drive. But of course is a bit risky so do make a backup before. Anyway erase and install might work if the problem started with the lexmark driver, because fresh install will fix any file architecture problems etc. which maybe causing your problem.
Also another idea is to try to repair your mac with diskwarrior (from alsoft, but im not sure whether they have intel version yet.) another good program is tech tool pro.
well, good luck and tell us how it goes!
