TICKET ARCHIVE -> 10.4.7 upgrade on eMac

I just upgraded to 10.4.7 from 10.4.6 using oftware update on my eMac. Installed fine but there was a question thrown up re Mail password or keychain (cannot recall exactly), but it didn't seem clear which box to click, and I'm not sure now which one i did anyway. I think I hit one and then the same box came up again so I hit the other one. All I know now is that I'm not getting any mail IN on this eMac.

The settings in the prefs in Mail look ok/unchanged, and my MacBook that has the same settings but has NOT been upgraded to 10.4.7 sems to be receiving them ok to the same acct. Is it something to do with the keychain? Perhaps I clicked the wrong box!

If i upgrade my MacBook which option should I click to prevent this same problem happening. I apologise for not being able to relay exactly the options I was presented with after restarting after installing this upgrade.
Hoping you can help.

Dugg,

I understand exactly what happened. When you updated, Mail was included in the update. Mail wanted to know if it should update your keychain. The button you should have selected was the one on the far right in that dialog box - Update all now.

What you need to do is go to Utilities and open Keychain.
At the top left is a pad lock. Click on that and you will be asked for your Admin password. Type that in and hit the return key.

Now go to the Keychain Menu and select Preferences.
Click on the First Aid button.
Now make sure all the boxes are checked in this window.
Close the Preference window.
Quit Keychain.

Now give Mail a try. Let me know if you need further assistance.

Hi Cheryl,
thx for the great answer. Followed it easily word for word. I found that the keychain lock was not locked and found under prefs and first aid that all the boxes were indeed already checked. So, basically, it all seemed in order already, as you'd described.

I quit Keychain and, unfortunately, the problem in receiving emails still remains. It's ok sending, just receiving, if that's any clue. Any further suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I think I may have clicked the left hand box on the upgrade as you quite rightly surmised, then I quickly clicked the right one. Prob would have had no counter affect but thought I'd mention it. My incoming mail is coming into my Macbook ok, which has not been upgraded to 10.4.7.
Thx, David

David,

Are you allowing Mail on the MacBook to run constantly? If so, then it is the MacBook that is getting all the emails and your eMac is finding none.

Quit Mail on the MacBook.
Now send yourself an email. See if the eMac will get it.

If not, then it is time to reinstall the update. We have to trick the eMac into thinking it does not have it.
Go to the Go menu and select Computer.
Open the Library folder (the one sitting by itself).
Locate the Receipts folder and open it.
Now go to the view menu and select by list. This will put everything into alpha order. You want to find and delete the following files:

MacOSXUpd10.4.5PPCPatch.pkg
MacOSXUpd10.4.6PPCPatch.pkg
MacOSXUpd10.4.7PPCPatch.pkg
MacOSXUpdate10.4.4Patch.pkg

And any other MacOSXUpdate file in there.

Now close the window, empty the trash.
Go to this page to download the 10.4.7 combo update.

http://www.apple.com/support/downloa...7comboppc.html

When it is downloaded, install it.

Now once it is installed and you have restarted, go to the Utilities folder and have Disk Utility repair permissions.

Open mail. It will come up with that dialogue box again. Read it carefully because you want it to Always allow.

Keep me posted on how you do.

David,

Now it is time to repair permissions. Go to the Utilities folder and start up Disk Utility.
When that gathers information, click on the second icon in the side bar at the left.
Now in First Aid, click on Repair Permissions. This is at the bottom left of the main window. Repair Disk will be grayed out.

When done, quit Disk Utility and give Mail a try.

Let me know how you do.

Cheryl,
Repaired permissions but none were found to be incorrect.
No change.
If it's sending emails ok but not receiving them does that indicate anything? If it was an incorrect password (and I haven't changed it) it would show me a box to put the password in wouldn't it? ARRGGHH!
What next? Redo acct?
I'm connected via a ethernet cable into a belkin router, but my Macbook is working fine from it wirelessly, and as I say, I can send ok.

David,

What I believe is happening is Mail is not getting the password from Keychain to get your emails.

Go to Utilities and open Keychain access. Click on All items in the side bar at the left.
Now scroll through the list of passwords. You are looking for either mail.xxx.com or pop.xxxx.com, where the xxx is your isp in your email address.
Click on it, then hit the delete button on the keyboard.
You will get a warning asking if you are sure. Click on the delete button in that window.
Now quit Keychain Access and open Mail.

In Mail, go to Preferences>Accounts.
Make sure the account remembers your password. Type in your password in the Incoming Mail server section. (just re-typing the password - not changing it). Close preferences.
Now click on Get mail.
You maybe asked for your password. type it in and make sure you click on the box next to remember.

Now you should be getting your email.

cheryl,
Thx for your prompt replies, but I'm sorry to report that it has not corrected my problem. I deleted all pop and mail passwords relating to my ISP(only left the smtp one) and tried Mail's Get Mail. I get the beep as if it's tried but none. (and I know there should be some coming through as my Macbook is picking them up). As a test I then deleted the password in the Mail pref/acct set up field and saved so that Mail should ask for my password. Went to Mail, clicked on get mail and it STILL beeped as it does when collecting messages but DID NOT ask for my password to be tapped in or remembered. Weird, eh?
Does it tell you anything? Could this upgrade have been corrupted or damaged in instalation? Can I re-install the upgrade - if so, how?
Thx, david

by the way, I also changed another POP acct's password and THAT one DID prompt me to tap in the new password, but did not pull anything through. Just thought you should know that in case it indicated anything.

David,

I put a comment in your keyboard question, but just in case you don't get it here is a copy:

David,

First, assuming you are using OS X10.4, go to System Preferences>Keyboard & Mouse panel. Click on Keyboard Shortcuts.
Click on the button at the bottom right labeled Restore Defaults.

Now scroll down the list until you see Keyboard navigation. All the boxes should be checked in that list.

Close System Preferences and give the keyboard a try out.

David,

Yes, it does. It could very well be that another program has keyboard navigation that is taking over the entire system.

In System Preferences>keyboard & Mouse>Keyboard Shortcuts - scroll down to Application Keyboard Shortcuts and click on the arrow next to All Applications.

Something is taking the same shortcut as spotlight, etc. Uncheck that particular shortcut, or if you don't use that program, uncheck the main box for it.
Now give the keyboard a try.

RESULT!! Thank you thank you thank you Cheryl very much for being so patient and helping me through this problem. I am now receiving emails on both my Macs as b4! Re-install seems to have done the trick Funny, though I didn't get that box up re Allow Always. Anyway, lets not worry about that - it now works. Brilliant. Your work-through instructions are EXCEPTIONAL.
Kind regards,
David

PS I guess you don't work on hardware problems.... my numbers on my extended keyboard - only the numbers on the EXTENDED bit- do not work, and haven't for a while, and if I try to use them they freeze programmes like InDesign and I have to restart the program. Have tried a different keyboard, plus a different mouse, plus a different port on the Mac, but no change. Numbers do not work on any option. If you cannot help do not worry. I did send this in as a query and got one reply re try changing the keybd. Responded that it didn't help and haven't heard back. No name on who it was from. Not as much help as you've been.

David,

Try unchecking the entire Input section.

When did this problem start? Did you install anything just before this? Was it after a reinstall or upgrade?

Cheryl,
Thx for being brave enough to take THIS one as well.
I did as you described - keybd and mouse in system prefs - shortcuts>restore defaults. All boxes checked under keybd navigation. Tried numbers from extended numbers - none work. In the keybd shortcuts there are some warning triangles next to the check boxes under INPUT MENU and SPOTLIGHT saying Another action has the same hot key. You need to asign a new hot key to this action.

Does this have anything to do with the problem?
Thx, david

Cheryl, I've clicked Restore Defaults and the warning tiangles stay there, next to Input Menu and Spotlight - these both have the same keybd shortcuts listed against their respective sub menus (ie select the previous input source has apple space for it's shortcut, as does Show Spotlight search field). There are NO shortcuts listed under Applications. I tried deselecting the check box next to Input Menu, and the triangles do indeed disappear, but after clicking out of System Prefs (no do you want to save comes up by the way!) the prob still remains. In Mail it freezes the program and the numbers do not register. I have also tried highlighting the shortcut to change it (see I'm getting good at this aren't I?) and the computer just beeped and does not allow me to change it anything like space after I've double clicked it and it's highlighted but I have just managed to change the conflicting ones to F1 and F2. But the problem remains.
Weird one, eh?
any other suggestions?

David,

Do you have a tablet attached to the computer? The software for the Tablet might be doing this.

Double check one thing for me. While this may seem off base, go to System Preferences>Universal Access. When that opens check the very bottom of the window that Enable Access for assistive devices is NOT checked.

Now click on the Keyboard button. Make sure Sticky keys is turned off as well as slow keys.

Now click on the show All button at the top of the System Preferences window. Now go to the view menu and select Show by Category.

At the very bottom should list Other. What other programs are there if any listed?

David,

While this may be off the wall, uninstall Flip4Mac WMV. Then restart the computer and see if the keyboard comes back to life.

To uninstall Fip4Mac:

Did you install Flip4Mac? If so, uninstall it.

Version 2.x provides an uninstaller to remove Flip4Mac from your system. It is located in the Applications>Flip4Mac folder. Just run the uninstaller and Flip4Mac will be removed from your Mac! Any license file previously installed will remain.

For Version 1.x, remove the following files from your system
Macintosh HD/Library/Internet Plug-ins folder
Flip4Mac WMV Plugin.plugin
Flip4Mac Plugin.webplugin
Macintosh HD/Library/PrefPane folder
WmvPlayer.prefPane
Macintosh HD/Library/PrefPerferences folder
net.telestream.wmv.import.plist
net.telestream.wmv.plugin.plist
net.telestream.wmv.export.plist
Macintosh HD/Library/QuickTime folder
Flip4Mac WMV Import.component
Flip4Mac WMV Export.component
Macintosh HD/Library/Receipts folder
Flip4Mac WMV Player Installer.pkg
Flip4Mac WMV Export Installer.pkg

Arh! I did shut off Input Menu completely and no change BUT I have just switched to my son's user page and, guess what, yes, all the numbers on the keybd work perfectly when logged into his page!
What does that point to then?

Hi, ALL boxes you mention were found UNCHECKED as they should be.
No tablet device attached.
Under 'Other' I have Deja Vu, Flip4Mac WMV and Stuffit AVR. I honestly cannot remember exactly when this problem started but it could well have been after istalling one or the other of these two latter programs. Are their listing significant?

Hi Cheryl,
Uninstalled Flip4Mac WMV v.2 - all gone, but no change to the keys in MY user page. My son's user page still works fine though as I said.
Look I don't use these very often - ok it would be great if it all worked perfectly - but I'm guessing we're running out of options??
Am at work all day Sat so you may not hear from me till Sun after tonight.. am up for a few more hrs if you have any more suggestions. Many thx, David

David,

Did you at one point have a different keyboard that required software installed?

One more thing. Go to System Preferences>International.
Click on the Input button.

Uncheck all the languages that you do not use - especially Japanese. The only language checked should be your main language. You will not be able to uncheck the computer's main language. At the bottom of the input window is Input source options. Make sure Allow a different input source for each document is selected.

Now you should have your keyboard back.

Hi Cheryl,
No, I did not have a different keybd at any stage. A new moues (Mighty Mouse) that I installed new software that came with the mouse. Can't say for certain whether the prob was from then or not. May well have been b4. But no new keybd or corresponding software.

Went to international. I had Ameriacan and British checked plus the very top box labelled Character Palette (which incidently is NOT checked when I open up my son's user page that works perfectly).
So tried it with British(there's no British Extended, should there be?) on and US off.
US Extended on, British off.
British on but with Character palette off. (Show Input menu in menu bar becomes unchecked when I do this).
So have tried those combos and still the same. Numbers only by the way (0-9)... the other keys work on the ext palette.

David,

That is strange. At this point, all I can suggest is that you compare your home folder Library to your son's. Something in your Library folder is messing with the keyboard.

OR this is easier:

You can try creating a new account and give it Admin privileges, then log out of your account, and log into the new account. Do you have full keyboard?

If so, you can delete the first user account and reassign that home folder to your new account.

Here is an explanation of how to do it:

Hi Cheryl,
Thx for all your advice over the last few days!
Have opened up my son's Library and mine and seeing how much there is to check decided to NOT go that route.
However looking at the second option... new acct with admin priveleges. Set that up and the keybd works fine! but I'd have to set up Mail again, open all the progs i want open in the dock again, trsf my iTunes music (?) and set up other things that were already set up on my main user, no doubt, just so I can use those few keys! I think I won't bother with that unless I get really peed off with not having the use of them. At the mo it's not a major problem as I say plus those instructions on the apple page looked a bit worrying. Don't want to cause further, major, problems by deleting something major accidentally!
Thx again for your help on both problems.
I hope that in future, if I get any further problems, I might be lucky enough to get you again.
Best regards, David

Cheryl,
Just b4 we close shop on this query - can I just go back a few stages to the System Prefs>International>Input Menu.

Originally when I opened this up it had Character Palette checked at the top. This was no checked on my son's or my Macbook, so I unchecked it. Correct?
Then on opening both British AND US were checked, as they were on my Macbook and son's... so after unchecking US and testing and finding no change, I reverted to keeping them both checed. Correct?

Further down in the International box we have the Input menu shorts which are ok now as I changed the conflicting ones under Spotlight (in Keybd and Mouse>keybd shortcuts). Why do you think when I click Restore Defaults under that section it reverts to the conflicting shortcuts under Input Menu? My son's are ok but if I press restore under his it converts them also to the conflicting ones! (??)

Back to International. Nearer the bottom we have Input source options... Allow a different input source 4 each document is checked. Correct?
And finally on that page the Show input menu in menu bar is checked.

No other language is checked. Is it ok to have 2 checked?

Finally, under Keybd Shortcuts (Keybd and Mouse) at the bottom, I have Text boxes and lists only checked now as opposed to All controls, as my son's and Macbook were set to this option.

I do seem to have tried every combination there is going so I'm not sure where this is gonna get me but I thought if everything was set to what you say, then at least I'd feel we've done everything we can b4 giving up entirely.

Many thx,
David

David,

You do have everything set correctly. I am not sure why it goes back to the conflicting settings when you hit the restore defaults. I wish at this point I was sitting in front of your computer.

Sometimes technology has a mind of its own. This morning I had some trouble and ended up reinstalling the OS on my internal hard drive. In fact, I found out that my last backup was not saved correctly. Now I am working to get everything updated, then do a full backup. And I will need to shop for a new internal hard drive as this one is starting to fail on me.

I am totally confused at to how to solve your problem. How can just the numbers be nonfunctional in the extended side of the keyboard on just one user? I really don't know.

I am sorry I could not help you on that one.
