I have 12" G4 powerbook. This week it will no longer boot up. It either sits there with a blank screen (the screen just prior to the apple) or it gets to the apple screen but the little timer just runs for hours and the computer does not boot.
I have tried holding down:
- option
- command
- command s
during boot to no avail. I also tried to do shift-control-option-power button while it was off wait 5 seconds and then start. I got the same result. What can I try next? I tried connecting an external firewire and an external usb drive with system software on it, same result.
I can not get the system cd in there to run disk tools because it will not eject the cd.
Can I connect it to my imac G3 with firewire and try using disk utility even if it won't boot? What else can I try?

Hello :-)
My name is Carolyn and I will try to assist you.
Sorry to hear your PBookG4 isn't booting properly... that can be so frustrating! But maybe I can help...
How old is the PBook? If by any chance it's less than a year old it's still under warranty. Do you have AppleCare???
When was the last time you used the battery? And how long have you had the PBook that it booted properly to the Desktop? Have you downloaded any 3rd party software lately? Sorry for the 3rd degree, but it's just the elimination process.
You already tried resetting the PMU but go to the link and make sure you are using the correct instructions for doing this. It's a little different on various PBooks:

You mentioned that you can't insert the system cd because it won't eject the cd ??? Is it the System CD in the drive??
Please post back ... if it's the System CD in the drive you are luck!
Carolyn :-)

Hello,
I meant to say you are in luck. LOL ... if it's the System CD in the drive, make sure the PBook is Shut Down. Power up the PBook and hold down the C key at the same time... hold it down until you see the Apple logo appear on the Desktop. The Installation window will appear... Quit the Installation and click on Utilities in the Menu. Then click on Disk Utility. Click the First Aid tab at the top, then click the Verify butto n on the right.
You can connect the iMac G3 with Firewire.. here's the how-to for Target Disk Mode:
How to Connect Two Macs using FireWire and Target Disk Mode
FireWire Target Disk Mode allows two Macintosh computers to be connected to each other using a 6-pin FireWire cable, resulting in one computer's desktop showing both hard drives.
Host:
The computer that will be mounting the second hard drive is also called the Host machine. In the following example, the Host machine is a desktop PowerMac G4.
Target:
The computer that will be connecting to Host machine is called the Target machine. In the following example, the Target machine is a Titanium PowerBook G4, a.k.a. TiBook.
Make sure the Target (TiBook) computer is turned-off.
Important: Disconnect all other FireWire cables and devices.
Turn on the Host (Desktop) computer.
Plug in the 6-pin to 6-pin FireWire Cable into both the Host and Target computers.
While holding down the "t" key on the Target's (TiBook's) keyboard, turn on the Target computer. Continue to hold down the "t" key until you see a FireWire icon floating on the screen
The icon of the Target's (TiBook's) hard drive will appear on the desktop of the Host (Desktop) machine. At this point, you can transfer files or copy directories to and from both drives, just as you would with any other disk, i.e. a Zip Disk.
Once you've completed copying files, drag the Target's (TiBook's) Hard Drive to the trash can to un-mount the volume. Alternatively, you can click on the Target's (TiBook's) Hard Drive once to select it, then using the Menubar, go to File/Put Away.
Press the power button on the Target (TiBook) computer to turn it off.
Unplug the 6-pin to 6-pin FireWire Cable from both machines.
When you hold down the "t" key and turn on the Target (TiBook), the screen will have a floating FireWire icon.
On the Host (desktop) machine you will see two drives mount on the desktop, the second drive icon belongs to the Target (TiBook).
