Jeff,
Welcome to NoWonder! Your problem could involve a number of issues. Do the hard drives mount on the desktop, or can they be seen by a SCSI utility such as SCSIProbe or Drive Setup? (Note: *very* recent updates to Drive Setup are available from Apple's software support website, at
.) If not, you may still have either a termination problem (some drives are finicky about termination) or a SCSI ID problem or both. Make sure the external drives are set to a different SCSI ID than any of your other drives.
Also, if you have Norton Utilities or another disk repair program, you can try using that to see if it will "find" the drives. In Norton, be sure to select the "Show Missing Disks" option. Norton has the advantage of being able to inspect the drives without mounting them.
How old are these drives? If they are *very* old, they may not be suitable for use with a recent Mac. You didn't mention which model of Apple Macintosh you own, but you're running OS 8, so it must be a PowerPC.
When connecting the drives, try turning off all unnecessary extensions/control panels, and if you can, disconnect any and all other devices from the system. Once you get the drives initialized properly, they may work under normal circumstances.
Hopefully one of these suggestions will help solve your problem. If not, or if you have other questions, please feel free to e-mail me. Thank you for using NoWonder!
Sincerely,
