I was able to get my emac OS10.2.8 up and running wireless DSL . I had a crash yesterday, and now I can't get the airport card to recognize the modem...I have been on the phone for HOURS with sbc tech support....no help.

The other computer (mac lap top) works fine with the modem.

I am so frustrated! Can somebody P*L*E*A*S*E help??
How do I reconfigure the Network to recognize the modem?

I am not too techie, but I follow directions well.

Hello Melinda

The first thing to realize, is that volunteers like to deal with calm customers. When you put in a sentence like "Can somebody P*L*E*A*S*E help??", you scare away volunteers that think they may get yelled at.

To help you with the problem, it will be great if you could supply more details. More details are better than less.

1) What is the brand and model number of the modem ?
2) what equipment crashed ?
3) What is the laptop ? model ?
4) Does the DSL modem have ethernet ports ? Who supplied the modem ?

Thanks

sorry about the caps. it is pleading and not yelling!

2WIRE 163 1701HG gateway
epson scanner crashed
emac
yes, it has ethernet ports and was supplied by SBC

I really appreciate any help. I have called SBC a zillion times, and the mac support line once, to no avail.

Even suggestions about how to get around this problem would be good.

Hi Melinda

The first thing I want to do is see if your eMac can get on the network at all. Do you have an ethernet cable or can you borrow one ? plug it into the modem and into your eMac and a lite may go on at the modem. Try your eMac now and see if it is on the network.

I am going to try to get the user manual for the modem. My thought is that the eMac has some bad settings. Did the epson crash while attached to the eMac ?

Yes, we are up with the ethernet cable. yes, the crash was epson to emac...

A friend had me find an airport file with "plist" and drag it to the trash. It was "locked" so i threw it away using the option key.

Thanks for your help,
Melinda

Do you want to work on the wireless issue , further ?

Well, part of me wants to figure out how it was working before, and not working now, and the other part is just glad the ethernet cable works! I'm sort of like a dog on a bone with computer issues, but I can let go when they're too crazy.

So, if anyone knew a quick/good solution I would go for it, but it is OK to just move on too.

I really appreciate all of your help. We are planning to buy another mac (ibook) this week, and I may just end up updating the OS on the other two computers too.

Is it a huge risky deal to upgrade the OS?

Thanks again,
MElinda

You have been a big help and support,

GREAT ! I am yelling.

Upgrading has been very smooth for me. Others have complained. I love the latest version of Tiger.

I would definitely recommend making a backup first. If you need backup recommendations, let me know.

I have a Firewire fantom drive that I back things up on. I hope i've done it right. I just drag the things i want to back up into it.

BTW I had to reset the wireless channel to 6, and then the password thing, and then the SUCCESS (I am yelling too).

Any recommendations you have would be great.

Thanks again,
Melinda

Here are some comments from other folks I know

Au contraire! Carbon Copy Cloner has been compatible with Tiger since 10.4.2 (it still doesn't work with 10.4.0 or 10.4.1, but nobody should be running those versions). Another backup option is Apple's Disk Utility, which ships with OS X. Backup are made using the Restore tab, which reminds me of how Microsoft makes you click the Start button to shut down. Nevertheless, that's how it's done.

http://www.shirt-pocket.com/ Super duper
Free "Clone Only" Version
You can download SuperDuper! right now and back up and clone your drives for free! The unregistered version will allow this very useful functionality, but that's only scratching the surface of SuperDuper's full capabilities. $19.95

get either Carbon Copy Cloner or Super Duper. From what I've read,
perhaps Super Duper is the better utility. It is the newer of the two
system cloning utilities for OSX that have come out in the last couple
of years.
