This drive is also identified in the Disk Utility as "Master G3".
While the disk utility has "38.17 GB Maxtor" in BOLD typeface, the sub-listing; "Master G3" is listed in a "shadowed" or lighter typeface.
The Desktop & Finder omit this drive, & all the programs, records & documents stored there are unavailable as a result.
Disk Utility gives this report for 38.17 GB Maxtor when using the "First Aid" feature; "Verify Disk";
Verifying disk "Master G3".
Checking HFS Plus volume.
Checking Extents Overflow file.
Checking Catalog file.
Checking multi-linked files.
Checking Catalog hierarchy.
Checking volume bitmap.
Checking volume information.
The volume Master G3 appears to be OK.
Verify completed.
Disk Utility gives this report for "Master G3" when using the "First Aid" feature; "Repair Disk";
Repairing disk "Master G3".
Checking HFS Plus volume.
Checking Extents Overflow file.
Checking Catalog file.
Checking multi-linked files.
Checking Catalog hierarchy.
Checking volume bitmap.
Checking volume information.
The volume Master G3 appears to be OK.
Repair completed.
With all THAT being so, I am stumped on getting the machine to restore access to the files/apps on this drive & could REALLY use some help. so ... HELP?
Cheers & Thanks

Hello, Tony.
The fact that "Master G3" is shadowed and the contents not available is because the volume is not mounted.
Q1: Have you tried clicking on the 'Mount' button in Disk Utility while the name "Master G3" is selected?
Q2: Where is this drive located? Is it a second internal drive, is it an external drive in a FireWire enclosure, an external drive in a USB enclosure?
Q3: If Disk Utility did not help you mount the volume, do you have any other disk utilities that you could use to help you mount it (but not necessarily run a repair). I would not use Norton Disk Doctor to run a repair, but I would ask it to mount the drive.
Q4: Has this problem persisted through a log out-log in cycle or through a reboot?
I think I'll wait to hear some of these answers before I take any other stabs.
Thanks for being with MacOSX.com
Best wishes,
Ed

Hello Ed, & Thank You!
I will answer in "sequence" ...
Q1: Have you tried clicking on the 'Mount' button in Disk Utility while the name "Master G3" is selected?
A1: This particular Disk Utility (10.3 v88.11) on/in this G3 does not afford a "Mount" button. WHY it says it's a "10.3" is beyond me ...
When I use the "Options" (located in the toolbar) and select mount after highlighting BOTH "Maxtor 38.17" &/or "Master G3", ... nothing happens.
Q2: Where is this drive located? Is it a second internal drive, is it an external drive in a FireWire enclosure, an external drive in a USB enclosure?
A2: The drive IS internal; The machine is (I believe) still in it's original configuration, with three internal hard drives. I have not tampered with anything internally.
Q3: If Disk Utility did not help you mount the volume, do you have any other disk utilities that you could use to help you mount it (but not necessarily run a repair). I would not use Norton Disk Doctor to run a repair, but I would ask it to mount the drive.
A3: Sadly, Norton has not been able to accomplish ANYTHING, save telling me I should repair the problem. It manages to inform me that it has "encountered an unexpected eroor and must quit" ... It doesn't afford me the "Mount" option either ...
Q4: Has this problem persisted through a log out-log in cycle or through a reboot?
A4: Through MANY Re-Boots & shut-downs. I'll try the Log Out, Shut Down & Re-Start now ... same old same old, although I wasn't asked for an User ID & Password on the re-start after logging out & then shutting down ...
Anyway, That's My Story And I'm Stickin' To It!

Hi.
Hmmm.
In Terminal, type
diskutil list
Since the drive is visible, it should be reported in this list, probably as /dev/disk1 or /dev/disk2. If it is reported as
/dev/disk1, then type:
diskutil mountDisk /dev/disk1
See if that will mount it.
Q1: Do you have a copy of Disk Warrior?
Q2: Do you have any external drive enclosures, and if so, are you comfortable with taking out this internal drive and putting it in your external enclosure?
It could be a physical problem with the drive.
Best wishes,
Ed

Unfortunately, "Terminal" is absent from this machine; I used Finder to search for it, utilizing the "Everywhere" option. Various files described as "document" filetypes did show up, but no "application". I have not YET found a download source for it as an Application ...
Disk Warrior (download version 3.0) cannot accomplished the goal either ... I get instead; "Disk Warrior encountered an unexpected error while attempting to show the preview disk "untitled" on the desktop. To preview this disk, restart from the DiskWarrior CD and try rebuilding again (2160, 2304).
The DiskWarrior Report advises; "DiskWarrior has successfully built a new directory for the disk named "untitled"." The new directory cannot replace the original directory due to a Mac OS services failure."
Apart from that, the report tells me everything is fine with the drive ...
The external CD/DVD/R+W is a Pacific Digital. I am borrowing it from from my room-mate but there is software to install it to a MAC. IF (!) I put a disk IN it, it will appear on the dektop ... however it doesn't improve any performance when trying to boot up, as was/is the casw with the internal CD drive ...
Certainly, there is a Hostile Ghost In The Machine ...
I Thank You ALL for your help with apparently NEW Major Bug/Glitch ...
Cheers,
TF

Hi, Tony.
Do you have enough room on your other drives to save all the data on the drive that won't mount? If so, try to use DiskWarrior to scavenge the files from the drive that won't mount and save them to your other drives. To do so, when Diskwarrior is fully open, hold down the 'Option' key and the 'Rebuild' button will turn into 'Scavenge'. When it is done, my hope is that it will have found your files on that drive *and* let you save them to your other drives. In that way, you won't be dependent on it being able to save the directory back to that drive.
If you are able to use Disk Warrior (or something else) to fully recover your files from that drive, then I'd suggest reformatting it and seeing if that solves the problem. I'd not store anything critically important on that drive until I felt certain that this issue was not caused by that drive. Does DiskWarrior's hardware check reveal anything about that drive?
Good Luck,
Ed

I may have committed "Industrial Strength" folly; I used Disk Utility to PARTITION The Maxtor, resulting in Master G3_1 & Master G3_2. Neither of them allow access to the prior apps/files stored there before ... BUT, I MAY be able to recover them at a later time when I have the "parent" OS software corrected on the Main G3 drive, and have correctly identified/procured/installed the Specified (where is THAT info?) CD-ROM drive internally ...
So, if there exists ANYWHERE, a listing of WHICH CD drives are compatible with these MAC machines, that will help tremendously ...
And now (11:24 pm PDT), it's Guinness Time.
Hope you are well

Hi, Tony.
I personally, would not know how to recover the data on that drive.
Here is a link to compatible devices and peripherals for 10.4...old links I've found for 10.2 led here, so I'm not sure where to find the original document for 10.2?
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25403
I guess that I might look at compatible drives that I was interested in, and then contact the manufacturers page to see if it was compatible with Jaguar. In that way, if you update to Tiger sometime, it will still be compatible with Tiger. Or you might look into an external.
At any rate, I'm going to return this to the pool so that someone more familiar with Jaguar-compatible internal CD drives can comment.
Best wishes,
Ed
