Hi guys,
I've been a iMac G5 user for little over a year now and have never felt the need to give her a spring clean (and yes she is a girl). However just recently she's started to get a bit sluggish and with a windows based system there are a number of ways to spruce up your PC i.e Re-format, Defrag etc...
My question is this..
Can you suggest a good utility tool (or a built in one) which will help me remove some of the odd kinks and quirks the old girl has picked up.
Cheers for your time.
Gary
Gary,
First, do you turn off the machine every night? If so, the nightly maintenance is not being done. This nightly routine clears out the system logs among other things and keeps the system running smoothly.
Download and install Macaroni
http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/9633
Once installed, have it do all three routines (daily, weekly & monthly), then set it to do them when you start up.
Second: Repair Permissions. This should be done after a major install of a program or update.
Go to Applications>Utilities and start up Disk Utility.
After a few moments, Disk Utility will have gathered all the information about all the drives you have on the machine.
Click on the second icon in the side bar at the left (the one with OS X on it). Now click on Repair Permissions. The Repair Drive will be grayed out.
Once done, quit Disk Utility.
Third: For a good utility that will rebuild the files and optimize the drive get Disk Warrior
http://www.alsoft.com/DiskWarrior/index.html
The CD is a startup disk. Starting up with it (insert CD, restart computer, hold down the C key) it will check the hard drive, repair it and generally make it run smooth.
Once done, quit Disk Warrior, restart the computer and you should have her running like new.
While there are other utilities out there, these are the ones I use and never have a problem.
