I'd like advice about adding DVD to my Mac G4: 467 Mhz - 768 MB SDRAM - 133 MHz Bus - 400 Mb/sec. Firewire - 1.2 Mb/sec. USB - CD drive drawer and blank drawer panel below that. Which DVDs are easy to install/use? Do they come with Mac software? Do I need to buy software? There seem to be so many DVD drives to choose from, and a large price range. Should I add a hi-speed Firewire card? Hi-speed USB? I'd like to upgrade to OS-X 10.4 and can't without DVD.

It's actually pretty easy to install a DVD internally, tho with those specs, maybe it's time for a new Mac? Keep in mind that you can also get Tiger on CD if you want. I believe you have to exchange your Tiger DVD for the CDs for a $10 charge.

Anyway, many of the "SuperDrives" are Pioneer DVRs. You could probably find any of the DVR-103s on up (I think they are up to DVR-109 now) depending on price and on whatever features you want.

The form factor is the same as your CD ROM. You could install it in the slot beneath even. Either Jaguar or Panther should recognize the drive, but you may need to load a neat little program named Patchburn to get it to work with iLife programs. Patchburn will also allow you to buy an external DVD drive and have it function as a Superdrive.

If you buy from someplace like Other World Computing, you might get a couple of bundled apps (Toast is nice) and some advice. But I really have to wonder what you want to do with the drive...You might do well upgrading your processor before the DVDR, especially if you are planning to burn DVDs or work with iDVD.
