I just got a new MB. I used migration assistant to transfer files from old PB G4. I didn't transfer over old user accounts by unchecking the "users" box when prompted to select items to transfer. Most of my applications and a lot of my files transferred succesfully but a lot didn't too, namely, all of the folders and documents on my old desktop. I thought maybe this was because I didn't transfer the users. So then, after the initial transfer, I tried to use the migration assistant again and add one of the old user accounts. After 4 hours or so, I got this message:

"transfer error. an error has occured that prevents the transfer process from continuing. click skip to continue thru the set-up process. to try again first check that all the firewire and power cables are power cables are properly connected and click try again."

What should I do?

If you haven't done much on the new Macbook yet, here's what I would do.
Erase the drive. Restore your system with the restore DVD that shipped with your Macbook, you will then have a completely fresh system again. It will begin with asking to transfer your files, as you did the first time. Now, you can choose to let everything transfer. You can always pick-and-choose to remove files and users that you don't need on the new system, but you would start with everything on the new system. As you can see, it's sometimes a simpler process to remove files, than to try to re-import things that you missed.
If you already have important files on your new system, you can back those up - or decide if you want to try the transfer process again (might work the second time, eh?

Your desktop belongs with the user, so that's why those files/folder did not transfer. You could also just copy the contents of the Desktop folder on your old hard drive to your new user Desktop folder on your new system. There's really lots of ways to do this.
I would recommend just starting from scratch, unless you have a powerful reason not to do that.

Thanks, Dale. I've erased the disk and installed the os again. I'm transferring everything over from my old mac with the migration assistant right now. It's still got 5 or so hours to go according to the assistant's estimation. I think it might be ok.

Unfortunately, there was another "tranfer error" after trying it again. It was going all day, about 8 hours. I'm trying it again right now. It doesn't seem right though. Should I take it in?
