My address book app is gone. Does this mean that I've lost my data? If there is a file where data info is kept, would it be overwritten if I reinstall the app from the original disk?

Thanks,

Sandra

Sandra,

It just means that the application linked to the icon is not in the location it was. To fix this, go into your Applications folder, find "Address Book" and launch it. Control-click on the "new" icon of the running Address Book application and select "keep in dock". Then go and drag the icon with the question mark to above the dock and let go, and it will disappear. Then you can move the new Address Book icon to the previous location (or wherever you want) and your good to go.

Thanks, Scott.

The problem is that the Address Book app is missing. It's not in the Applications folder. I have no idea where or how it got deleted. So if I reload it from the original disks, will I lose all of my data? I still have the files for the application, just not the app itself. I appreciate your help.

I received an email from this site asking for my response and that if I don't, the ticket will be closed. I DID respond... look above -- I have not received an answer to what I wrote before. So I guess the update you want from me is no, my question has not been answered. Please read my question that I submitted in response to Scott's answer. I have the application folder, but the application itself is missing. In the application folder, I still have the data file with all of my contacts in it (can't read it, but it's code). If I reinstall Address Book from my original disk that came with my mac, WILL IT OVERWRITE MY DATA FILE? Will I lose it? If so, then obviously this is not something I want to do. So I'm still waiting for a response and I don't know why I'm getting emails telling me that techs are "patiently waiting" and that they haven't heard from me in 24 hours. Again, read above, it was sent 2 days ago. I'm still waiting for the answer. Sorry if I sound short, I'm just frustrated -- it's been a very long day.

Sandra,

We are not sure why those emails were going out and we are working on correcting the problem. In the meantime, let me continue to help you with your problem.

First, open a window and in the search box in the title bar of the window type in Address Book. Does it come up with anything?

If it found the application, then you need to click on the search item and at the bottom of that window, it will show you where it is. You then can go to that folder and move the app to the Hard drive>Applications folder.

If it does not find the app, there is an easy way to install just AddressBook.

First you need to download Pacifist from here:

http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/6812/pacifist

Startup Pacifist, then insert your OS X CD Disk.
Now in the Pacifist window click on Open Package.
You want to Extract Address Book from the OS install. Doing a find will locate it faster.
Once you have found the file, install the files to their default locations on the main hard disk where the Installer would place them, choose “Install Files to Default Locations” from the File menu.

Once done, you can quit Pacifist, eject the disk and start up Address Book from the Applications folder.

Thanks, Cheryl. I did everything, but when I go to install the file on the main hard disk, the "Install Files to Deafult Locations" is dimmed out.

Sandra,

Then have Pacifist install Address Book to the Applications folder. It should allow you to do this.

It's also dimmed out. In the header it says "there are no files to extract."

Sandra,

Did you find Address Book in the list of files to install from on the OS X disk?

Let me pull out my disk and give it a try.

Cheryl,

When I go to Pacifist / Open Package and navigate to the Mac installation disk. I search for Address Book and this comes up:

Contents of AddressBook / Applications / Address Book.app / Contents ...

It won't let me Install Files to Default Location, Install Files to Other Disk, or Extract Files to Custom Locations

The lock at the top shows that I am authorized

Mine is inside of the "Install Bundled Software Only," but if I click on that then it starts installing the entire bundle.

Sandra,

You may want to quit Pacifist, then start over.
Here are the steps:

First make sure you have the Install 10.4 disk inserted.
Now click on Apple Install Packages from the Pacifist window.
A new window will appear list Mac OS install. Click on okay.
Now wait for Pacifist to load the packages.
A new window will appear.
Click on the arrow next to Contents of EssentialSystemSoftware
Now look for Contents of AddressBook.pkg and click on the arrow next to it.
Next, click on the arrow next to Applications (a folder)
Now click once on Address Book.app then click on the Install icon at the top of the window.

You should be set now.

Cheryl, thanks so much for your help. Unfortunately I don't have the CD for the 10.4 update -- it was one of those automatic downloads...

On my hard drive in Library / Receipts, I found AddressBook.pkg When I click on it, it asks me if I want to install Address Book. If I do this, will I lose all of the data I have?

I don't believe this! I opened Pacifist and went through the steps navigating to the HD Library/Receipt/AddressBook.pkg and then clicked through to the app. The Install icon at the top is dimmed out -- this is so puzzling. Thanks for your patience Cheryl. Unfortunately I have to head out and hit it again tomorrow.

Sandra,

When I refer to the OS X install, it is the 10.4 Tiger CD/DVD. You should have this as the first 10.4 install must be from the disk. All the updates are then installed via Apple's download.

I do not know why Pacifist is not letting you install - unless you are logged into a user that is not set to be administrator to the computer.

Let's start over.
Go to Home>Library>Application Support and locate the Address Book folder. Move that folder to the desktop. This will save everything in it.

Now go to Hard Drive>Receipt and locate the Address Book.Pkg
Click twice on it and allow it to install. Remember to install it in the Application Folder on the Hard Drive if it asks you where to install (Not in your home folder).

Once done follow the prompts as you may need to restart the computer.

Now go to Home>Library>Application Support and locate the Address Book folder and trash it. Move the Address Book folder from on the desktop to the Application Support folder.

I got as far as "remember to install it in the Application Folder on the Hard Drive... Not in your home folder." It doesn't give me an option—only option IS the Hard Drive.

Sandra,

That is okay. I didn't know if the installer would give you a choice. Are you all set? Did you complete the installation?

Sandra,

Using the receipt package will not work since there are errors. You will have to find your 10.4 Tiger install disk. (do not worry about the updates that took you to 10.4.x) If you do not have the Tiger install disk, you can not replace Address Book until you do find it.

First start up Pacifist.
Insert the Install 10.4 disk.

When done, place your Address Book folder from the desktop to Home>Library>Application Support.

You should be set.

I think I may know why I don't have the disks. When I bought my Mac brand new, I had a lot of problems with it. It kept crashing and spent over a month at a local Authorized Mac Dealer. They couldn't figure out what the problem was other than that the software it shipped with was corrupt. They reinstalled the newest software at the shop (which was 10.4) and everything worked, I picked up my Mac and that was that. They never gave me any disks, however. Apparently the disks I have (the original disks) are not good. I don't know... I bought my Mac over 3-4 years ago. I think Tiger was just coming out.

Sandra,

You will need the Tiger install disk to re-install Address Book. You can try to borrow one from a fellow Mac user, or purchase one.

I had a bit of trouble finding a source for purchase, but found one here at Amazon

There's no way I can afford to purchase the entire package now. I'm trying to find a Mac user that may have it, but I'm relying on friends of friends and they aren't being very helpful. I guess I'll have to just live without the Address Book. What still puzzles me is what on earth would make the application for Address Book just eat itself? Without warning. I thought one would literally have to go into the folder and drag it to the trash for it to be deleted. It's upsetting. Anyway, thanks for your help.

Sandra,

First, your install disks should say 10.2, 10.3, or 10.4. Tiger came on DVD, so unless you requested CDs from Apple, I would say that the disks you have are either 10.2 or 10.3 (Panther).

Yes, if some one you know is able to send the Address Book to you, that is all you need. It is 21 MB large.

When you get it, you may need to unstuff or expand it. If you have Stuffit installed, that should be automatic. Once that is done, just drop it in the Applications folder.

Thanks, Cheryl. I'm getting a bad feeling about this. I never got any DVD Disks, and the install disks I have don't say whether they're 10.2, 10.3, or what. They just say Mac G5 Install Disk 1, etc. I ordered from MacMall, I hope I didn't get screwed somehow. I'm pretty sure the machine was shipped with Panther, and when I had so much trouble with it, the Mac dealership where I took my Mac, installed Tiger. So that's why I don't have any disks. Anyway there's no further responses needed. When I get the application I'll do as you say. If it doesn't work, I'd love to be able to contact you again. Is there a way? I'd hate to have to go through all of this again. Thanks for your help, Cheryl. You've been absolutely wonderful -- I can't say it enough.
