A week ago, my system locked up, and after hard-booting, I discovered that my Address Book was *empty*!! And, after looking in ~/Library/Application Support/Address Book/, found no '.data' files with anything in them except a simple entry for my own account.

What happened to my more than 900 contacts??

I've since gone back to Entourage to re-export my original contacts of 3 months ago, and am now trying to reimport them into my Address Book, but the import is not working.

Is there some kind of known

Jan,
Lockups can cause all sorts of weird issues. It's extremely critical that you backup your critical data.

I would try closing address book, moving the "Address Book" folder out of Application support, and the re-opening address book to at least try to get functional.

Also try deleting and/or moving the "AddressBookMe.plist" and the "com.apple.addressbook.plist" out of the preferences folder in your library.

Good luck, and let me know,

Sorry I didn't respond sooner (not that you've been holding your breath...)

I found the culprit -- a dangling integration with supposedly deleted 3rd-party PIM solution was still trying to sync with AddressBook.

Lots of time/effort later, all better. No 3rd-party Contact apps either.
