In Leopard on my macbook, using Mail:

When I click on the arrow for an email address and select "add to address book", Address Book opens like it should but the cursor is focused in spotlight.
I expect it to be in First name (as it used to be in Tiger) so I start typing, only to find my new email address card has disappeared and I am spotlighting through my cards. Grrr.

I can get used to it, if I remember, but is this a bug and will it be fixed?

Thanks.
Cynthia

So, maybe this behavior only happens when no name was already attached to the email address in the message? When I click Add to Address Book, I get no visual feedback, but that's because the email was sent by someone whose name was included with his/her address. I have to click Open in Address Book to get Address Book to open the sender's card, and then it's not in edit mode because that wasn't commanded by the open.

So, when I add a nameless address to address book, AB opens in edit mode, unlike the behavior you describe. Perhaps it's a bug only on your system. Try repairing permissions. Test removing preference files to see behavior with defaults. Perhaps even reinstall the full 10.5.1 update.

Ben,

Thank you for responding.
You are exactly right that this happens when the Address Book can't determine the user's names. That's why it opens for me to edit it.

I just tested it and it isn't doing it now. (It's hard to find email addresses that will truly test it. )

It's good to know that it isn't a Leopard bug needing a fix. Just a quirk, I guess, in my system that day (or those few days). When Address Book opens now, there's no focus, which is better than the focus being in spotlight.

Thanks.
Cynthia

Reinstalling 10.5.1 might still be useful, though these occasional single-time flukes are also possible. Or, when 10.5.2 comes out soon, download the combo from Apple instead of letting Software Update do its thing.
