I have Adobe Acrobat in the old OS 9 but I am using 10 and when I open the 9 it is saying that there are fonts missing
that I need to reload Acrobat or ATM - well I did the ATM and
it is still asking for the them. I am not sure what to do.
Thanks Loma

Hi Loma,

Are you running Mac OS X or Mac OS 9 as your primary Mac operating system?

Kevin

Well I am using OS X but I have to open other things in the OS 9 and that is when I get the message. I am not sure what is up with it.
This is what it says: The substitution fonts necessary for Acrobat or ATM are missing please reinstall either software package.
Please let me know. Thanks so much!

Am I going to get an answer to my question?

Loma,

Yes sorry for the delay. Why exactly do you need to use Adobe Acrobat for Classic when it should run perfectly fine in Mac OS X, if you're using the latest version for Mac OS X?

Well I am not in the latest OS X but I am in OS X - Safari
All I know is that window pops up and I don't have the fonts and
when I need to open something they are missing and it tries to
sub even though they are there in the OS X. I am not sure
what is wrong.

Ok do this. Open the /Applications folder and see if there is a Adobe Reader folder inside there.

If not, go to http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html and choose your Mac OS X version (btw, what is your Mac OS X version?) and then download the latest version of Adobe Reader.

So you're trying to open PDFs from Safari, correct?

Well I use Illustrator 7 and 8 and they are in classic - things are
emailed to me and I have to be able to open them - Also in
PageMaker. Some other things too.
So I have prob. with the fonts. They don't always come through.
I know they can turn them - but my boss and I have the same
ones and they are not coming through for some reason.
I am down loading that now. (should it be placed in the app. for the OS X or in classic?) Because it asked only for the hard drive.)
Loma

Well if you're downloading the Mac OS X one it should be placed into /Applications.
Loma Gibson - Oct 5, 2005 - 10:44 am

image
Well it didn't ask that it only gave me the choice of hard drive, which is the
OS 9 - I did drag it into the OS X App - but I don't think that will work do you... I tried other ways to get it to go strait into OS X but could not get it to do it.

You probably downloaded the installer/downloader program. Did you launch it? It should download and install for you.
Loma Gibson - Oct 5, 2005 - 10:55 am
image
image
Yes I did, but I am in classic too, because I am trying to work.
But I still have the pop up.
Do I have to open the ATM and write down the fonts and go
find them?

Loma,

Can you post the exact error message? I'll then research it and get back to you.

Ok, and you're getting this error in Acrobat for Mac OS X, or Mac OS 9?
Loma Gibson - Oct 5, 2005 - 12:08 pm

OS 9 when it opens - the pop up stays there
kainjow - Oct 5, 2005 - 12:09 pm

Ok, try opening it up from /Applications into Mac OS X (not Classic) and see if you get that same error. Are you trying to load a PDF from a file (i.e. double clicking it)?

I don't get it if I am in OS X - only when I open Classic.
That is when I get the pop up

Did you download the version for OS 9?

What version of OS X are you running? (10.2, 10.3, 10.4, etc)?
Loma Gibson - Oct 5, 2005 - 12:27 pm

I down loaded the one for OS X 10.3.
No I did not down load the one for 9. Is that what
I should do?

No you downloaded the right one. I'm just confused here.. when you go to open it, it launches in Classic, right? If so, Get Info on the Acrobat application in Finder, and there should be a checkbox for opening the app in Classic environment. See if this exists, and if yes, uncheck it.

Acrobat or Adobe Reader.
I did go to the 9 and opent Acrobat 5 and there is no
box to check for that... where else would it be?

Hi Loma,

I've been following your problem for a while now, and seeing as how Kevin has posted it back into the Open Pool, I thought I'd see if I could help.

I have a number of questions to ask you first. Please answer each one as clearly as possible, as I need the most detailed information possible to hel you with your problems and the responses you've given Kevin so far are a little confusing. I take it English is not your first language. If you number each reply with the same number as the question, it will help.

1. Are you getting the error message about missing fonts when you open a PDF you have downloaded from the internet?

2. Are you getting this error message when you try to create a PDF from Illustrator?

3. Which version of Adobe Acrobat are you using?

4. Are you using this version of Acrobat in OS X or OS 9?

5. You say you are using ATM in OS 9. Is that the ATM Control Panel or ATM Deluxe?

6. What software do you use to manage your fonts in OS X?

7. You say you have re-installed ATM. Is that correct?

8. Have you re-installed Acrobat?

If you can give me clear answers to these questions, we can hopefully solve this problem together.

Hi again,

Ooops! Sorry 'bout that!

So if I have this right, then, it's when you actually open the Acrobat application in Acrobat 5 that you get this error message.

It's your response to Question 8 that provides the clue. Acrobat keeps a set of fonts for its own use. The problem I have at the moment is that I am 100% OS X these days and don't have an OS 9 Mac around to check exactly the path and folder names of an OS 9 installation.

But, to cut a long story short, in your OS 9 System Folder, in a folder called Application Support, you should find a folder called "Adobe". Inside that, you should find a folder called "Fonts", which is where Acrobat keeps a set of fonts that it requires to be able to run. Somewhere down the line, they must have been corrputed or deleted.

Three possible solutions are:

1. Run Disk Utility and Repair Disk/Repair Permissions to try to repair any damage if the Fonts folder is there, but the fonts have become corrupted.

2. If you have another Mac with a similar setup, i.e. OS 9/Acrobat, etc, try copying the Adobe/Fonts folder from the other machine on to your Mac, replacing the damaged folder on your Mac.

3. Dig out your Acrobat install disks (wherever they may be, 'cos we don't do software piracy, do we?) and re-install Acrobat.

I'm sorry that I can't offer you an immediate fix, but one or the other of the solutions I have mentioned above will solve your problem.

Hope that helps!

Well it is when OS 9 starts up I don't have to be trying to open anything.
That is why I am so confused.
You see I bought this computer from my boss in another town...
and he has all the disks. So I have to have him dig it out to find
the one I need. I just started doing it all of a sudden that is
why I am so confused on it. I do have a bunch of fonts on
a disk but I don't know the list that Adobe needs to start up
in OS 9 is there a way to find out?

Hmmm...

As I mentioned earlier, I don't have an OS 9 setup to refer to, but if you send an e-mail to captainquark@macosx.com, I may have a solution.

I did the restart and all - it did change the pop up about the didn't shut down properly. Now it is just the other one I told you about.
So it did help - I guess I need to get the Acrobat now.
Thanks!
