the program kept crashing on launch. Re-installed Illustrator but same. (using MacOS10)

Have you repaired permissions yet? applications/utilities/disk utility/repair permissions.

Also, if that doesn't work, move your illustrator preference file and make it create a new one on restart.

Then I'd repair disk, see number 2 below.

If that doesn't work I'd reinstall Illustrator. Do you have CS?

Have you:
Repaired Permissions?: apps/utilities/disk utility/repair permissions
2. Booted up with your system disk and run Repair Permissions as well as Repair Disk?
