I can not connect power book g4 12' with mac os X 10.4.11 with power mac g4 quicksilver with mac os 9.2.2 using ethernet. Neither direct connection with crossover ethernet cable works nor using rooter.
Message appears: "this file server uses an incompatible version of the afp protocol. you cannot connect to it"

Crossover cable requires extra setup, so use regular connection through router.
On OS 9 in the File Sharing Control Panel, make sure the checkbox "Allow Connection Using TCP/IP" is ON (I don't have an OS 9 computer near me, so the words may be approximate).

Also on OS 9, to connect to the OS X computer, enter Server IP Address on the lower right hand of the Chooser window, not just select server in the window.

Make sure there is an account with the same username available on the other computer - so, you may need to create new users on each or change what you normally use on one to be like the other. Or, allow Guest in sharing (I don't remember where to check this on OS 9).

That still sounds like you haven't checked the Enable clients to connect using TCP/IP box in the OS 9 File Sharing control panel.
