Hi. Attempting to access two older Macs (7500 w/G3 upgrade and 6100 w/G3 upgrade, both running 9.2) from a G4 400 running 10.4. After browsing the network, both above-mentioned machines appear, although after selecting "Connect", an error message displays "The file server uses an incompatible version of AFP Protocol. You may not connect to it." I tried using AFP Bridge from Version Tracker, installed on both the G4 and 7500, and still no dice. Is there any work-around to get to these older machines from the G4 across the network? Any help greatly appreciated. Thanks. Scot.

Tiger uses TCP/IP only for Mac-to-Mac filesharing. In OS 9 Sharing Control Panel, check "Allow Users to connect using TCP/IP."
You can also connect from OS 9 to the 10.4 computer.
Let me know if that helps.

I see you are also accepting advice over on the regular forum. Good luck with that. :-)
When you want to solve your problem, please come on back.
Here's a discussion about appletalk from a "brand X" web site, for your consideration:

"Correct answers" are still free here in the Free Question/response Tech Support area.

Thanks a million. Here's the status: I enabled "Allow users to connect over TCP/IP" in FileSharing control panel as suggested. Still got the error message on the G4 when I selected the name of the 7500's main srive to connect. (Also restarted the 7500 to ensure changes would stick) Still no dice. Interestingly, when attempting to access the same machine from my daughter's All-In-One G3 iMac after browsing the network, the name shows up in the network window and mounts upon selection just fine. There are also 3 additional hard drive volumes within the 7500 and they are selectable and mount on her iMac just fine as well. So... this morning I opened a browser window and typed the afp address of the 7500 which appears in the FileSharing control panel window. It mounted on the G4 and other 3 volumes appear and mount as well. Will I have to use the afp address each time I connect rather than being able to use the machines name which appears in the network window when selecting "Connect to server..." ? Thanks for your help. You guys are great. PS Posted question also on Forums cause I figured more info would help rather than hurt

Thanks again. Scot.

Please excuse my being a smart-**s. You were right to seek any and all info. Just be smart about which advice to use :-)
The AFP address method you used is pretty much what you need to continue - like that link I gave you above indicates, Tiger is a kind of "transition state" with the ability to find AFP shares via appletalk, but only connect using TCP/IP.
You can also connect From OS 9 using the Server IP address. That was the first workaround I used.

Thanks buddy! And no, I didn't think you were trying to be a smart **s. You guys are the best! So I guess you're saying that there's never going to be any way to connect via the network browser by named volumes? I'll have to type in the IP/asp address each time to access either machine from the other, each time ...? Thanks again. Scot.

As long as you're communicating between OS 8-9 Macs and OS X Macs, that's right.

Wait- after you've connected once, doesn't that afp + IP address show up in Favorite Servers (in Go > Connect to Server)?
I don't have an OS 9 Mac at home to check that with...

Hi. No it doesn't show up in a named server window to connect, but the previously-accessed IP address remains highlighted in the "Connect To Server" window. This is fine althought when I need to connect to the other OS9 machines, and type in their IP addresses, the last one will always be the default when opening the "Connect To Server" window. May get cofusing as to which one was the last, and which one I really want at the time. See what I mean? Would be nice if they were just accessible by name as it used to be. Maybe 10.4 has screwed me from this luxury. What do you think? Thanks. Scot.

Not only has 10.4 taken that away, with the next major revision, I think appletalk discovery will be gone, too. Only computers and devices that respond using modern protocols (Samba and Bonjour, for example) will show up. Using the current afp://address method will be around - I guess!

Thanks dude. I'll guess my connect method has to be, as I've mentioned as successful in the previous posts. Thanks again for your help. You rule! Scot.
