Hello,

I changed the main user of my system (mainly only for the name of the 'home' to change) , after that i can get some programs to work. Al the programs which i installed myself worked fine, but programs like iChat, iCal, Adresbook and Mail didn't start up properly. They start up only with the icon which you can see in the dock, but no windows of the application. An other weird error i get after the change is that it chrashes when i fill in a form, for example with Safari a search in google crashes Safari with a for ever turning rainbow. This is only in Safari, not in mozilla or IE.

I tried to delete preferences and so on but that didn't helped.

Other suggestions?
(i prefer not to reinstal the OS)

thanks in advance.

Create a new account, log-in and see if the problem goes away. Delete the problematic account if the new account works.

Good Luck.

Thanks Peter,

I created a new account, and the applications work again. Only now i've got a problem with my ownership & permission. All the files (a lot) i created in the old account i cannot change (read-only) and some files i've even no permission. When i do get info an file it says the user is unkown or it is my old account. I can change the permission of a file, but on a folder with apply to enclosed items it doesn't seem to work. I set the new account to be an admin. What is the best way to set the permission to the new account or to the system? Because i'm the only one working on this computer i don't need these ownerships things. I use now 10.3.9. The only thing what works now is to set all the individual files to the new account, but that is a lot of work :-( .

thanks in advance,

aart.

I'm not sure about OS 10.3 but in 10.4 when you delete an account you have the option of saving the contents of the user's folder. As an admin you can unlock these folders then drag them over to your account.
There is probably a more efficient way in Terminal but that is beyond my knowledge.

Hey Peter,

thanks for the tip.. I looked also already, but it's difficult to find some good, trusted info. I tried to set it with the terminal with this message:
chown -R /Users/

like this:
LT05-aartcore:~ aartcore$ chown -R aartcore_g4 /Users/aartcore_g4
chown: /Users/aartcore_g4/Library/Application Support/Adium 2.0/Users/Default/libgaim/icons: Permission denied

LT05-aartcore:~ aartcore$

this looked liked that it worked except on the safari / iChat and adium programs,..
but after a check the files are still on name of the old account and for the new account read-only or even no access. Now i am working mostly on my old account because of the read-only files, but on that account the applications still don't work.

greetz,

aart
