Hi
I have installed an airport card to my iMac G3 450+ and it connects fine to my Safecom wireless router. The problem is it will not connect to the internet because it is assigned a temporary IP address (169 not 192). I am using DHCP and when I renew the lease nothing happens.
I have reinstalled OS 10.3.9 and have downloaded all the current updates.

To complicate matters further I have managed to connect via Ethernet to carry out the updates but now it will not connect to the internet also. In network preferences it tells me I am connected via Ethernet and even assigns an IP address but when I open Safari no pages are downloaded.

I have also connected it to my ibook G4 and macbook pro using Ethernet connected via airport but again it tells me I am connected to the internet but will still not load any pages. I think the airport card is fine so therefore assume it is a software problem due to the other issues.

Can you help?

Many thanks

Rick

I believe the problem is with your router. A temporary address of 169.* and not 192.* means that your iMac is not receiving an address via DHCP. I'd connect via ethernet cable to the router and then troubleshoot from there in the router's webadmin interface

Hi Grant

Thanks for the advice, I have managed to connect via Ethernet to my routers admin page, however I have no idea what to do now! Any suggestions?

Many thanks

Do you have authentication enabled in your router settings? If so try temporarily disabling it then restart your macs and see if they pick up a proper DHCP address. If they do then the problem is in the way you've told your macs to connect to the router.

Here's a tip that I use to get my macbook talking to my d-link wireless router. At the router I have 64-bit encryption enabled, but to connect to it I have to tell the airport to use 128 bit encryption and then enter my 10 digit hex password.

Thanks for the response I am away at work this week so unable to access my router. I will check out the settings and work from there.
Once again many thanks for your assistance.
Rick
