hey there, and thanks in advance for any and all assistance:

i am located in toronto, canada, and recently switched my internet services from bell sympatico high speed (<5MBps) DSL to primus standard (<5MBps) DSL. on the day of the switch, the sympatico modem and ethernet cable were all working perfectly with my airport express, as they have been for the past two years. when primus finally delivered the very late modem and startup kit three days later, the connection works with my computer, via ethernet, but not with airport express. i have changed the airport express settings for username and password and DNS to the best of my knowledge, to match the settings as outlined for primus on my system preferences, but the airport express does not connect to the internet.

with the cable plugged into the airport express, the signal is broadcast and available to my airport card. when i try to connect to the internet, the safari window states that i am not connected to the internet. it takes a long time to do this, and my connection even through the ethernet cable to my computer is much slower than with sympatico, so that may be a problem as well.

i have spoken with tech support from primus, and they claim to know nothing beyond the direct line setup for one computer, though the first rep with whom i spoke mentioned something about setting it up with airport, but it didn't work and i haven't been able to reach him again. any and all help is greatly appreciated. thank you!

Dear Nicholas,

My name is Vinko and I will attempt to assist you.

Please note that if you can connect to the router but you cannot connect to the Internet, means one or more of the following:
  1. your AirPort Express is not performing NAT routing.
  2. yourAirPort Express is not performing DHCP correctly
  3. your AirPort Express is not connecting to your ISP
  4. your Mac is not receiving a local IP address from your AirPort Express
For items 1 - 3 you need to use AirPort Admin Utility to ensure these are enabled. For item 3 you should be able to confirm this, by seeing if your AirPort Express has a public IP address as assigned by your ISP. This is shown in the Internet pane after you have asked AirPort Admin Utility to configure your AirPort Express. It should be in the section "Configure TCP/IP using PPPoE. The IP address should not be anything like "192.168.xx.xx" or "10.1.xx.xx".

For item 4, your AirPort Express should be set up to distribute a local IP address range. Either "192.168.xx.xx" or "10.1.xx.xx". Check in your Mac's Network Preferences to ensure that your Mac has an IP address in the corresponding range.

If your AirPort Express does not have a public IP address or if your Mac does not have a public IP address when you are connected directly to the ISP modem. Then your ISP is purposely preventing its customers from using their connection to connect more than one computer (ie. using a router like the AirPort Express).

BTW: your connection speed should be "<5Mbps" not "<5 Mega Byte per seconds".

I hope this helps.

Regards,
