hi,
my airport express base station ceased functioning a few months ago. (no power anymore to the station, i.e. the LED remained off). Apple sent me another one in replacement and I am now unable to connect wireless to the internet anymore, after many attempts.

I have a 733MHz G4 running OSX 10.4.2 to which I added an airport card. I have a DSL connection with a modem router, wifi compatible and the airport express base station is connected via Ethernet to the modem.

I have reset the airport station, and airport setup assistant seems to be doing its job, but at the end of the process, the LED is still blinking amber and there is an error message saying "THERE WAS AN ERROR JOINING THE AIRPORT NETWORK"

It is also strange that the System preferences -> network still shows the ID of my previous airport base station, and not that of the new one. Similarly, the apple -> network -> location shows the previous airport base ID (Hardware (MAC) Address).

Any idea or comment would be welcome
thanks.

Phillppe,

I had a similar problem so long ago that I can't quite remember what I did, but I think I had to call the cable company in my case and have them reset the modem. Also have you tried the Assist Me and Network Diagnostics in Network Preferences.

Hi Chuck,
Thanks for your answer.
Yes I tried the Assist Me and Network Diagnostics in Network Preferences.

Things have slightly improved but still no connection to the Internet. I have tried I think everything I could do: reset the dsl modem, removed the airport card in my G4, restarted, shutdown, inserted the card again, etc, re-done the whole setup process a few times.

The computer can see the wireless network correctly (Internet Connect and Airport Admin Utility) as well as the right AirPort Base Station info.

However the System Preferences and the System Profiler both still see the wrong AirPort Base Station ID.

Hi Chuck,

please ignore my previous email.
it seems to be working OK now!
the problem was that the wireless option of my modem had been deactivated by my internet provider!

Thanks for yr suggestion/
Philippe
