hiya. i have a new g4 laptop
0sx tiger
and i've been having troubles with my AirPort
Sometimes, while i'm browsing, etc, the computer suddenly slows down a lot and then i realize i'm not (and can't) get a signal anymore. i walk over to my old computer, and i'm fine -- it gets online in seconds -- so its not the wi-fi's fault.
when i walk back to my new g4 and restart-- no problem. it finds the signal again and we're off and running.
but having to quit everything and restart, is, obviously, a pain.
you heard of this before? is there a way to give the airport a kick in the pants without restarting? i tried turning it on and off, but that did nothing. same with opening the internet connect panel.

Hi Gary,
Try changing the channel used by your Airport base station. see
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58543 for possible causes of lovalised interference etc.
To change the channel use the Airport Admin Utility , select your network, use the "Airport" tab, and swap the Channel from its existing value (or "automatic") to something new. You may need to try a few channels if there is a lot of wireless activity in your area.
Cheers

PS
You may also want to make sure that the aerial in your PB is very firmly pushed home into the airport card. Its common to find that these haven't been pushed fully home, causing intermittent connections and drop outs.

a few problems:
re: checking the aerial in mhy powerbook - yikes! how do i do that? do i have to opwn up my computer??
how can i check this safely?
re: airpot utility:
when i go to internet connect, i can find my base station id (when it's not having these intermittent problems)
it;s cauled Default, and has a bunch of colons: base id: 00:8F:00 etc
but when i go to
airport admin utility, i9 cant see anything. huh?
when i go to Other or Rescan, still nothing.
ps: interference robustness seems to do nothig, too. should it do anything?

ps: the wi fi i've been using is not an apple airport, but it worked/works fine with my g3 laptop. it's a D-link

Hi Gary,
As your base station isn't an airport you will need to access it using the web browser approach that you used when first setting it up to change the channels.
The setup process varies from model to model, but esentailly you enter the units url in your browser (you may have to directly connect with an ethernet cable first, or you may be able to do it with the relaibly functioning computer) and then navigate around until you find the appropriate place for channel changing (they all have some facility for this, afaik) Your D-Link manual should have specific instructions for your model.
You don't say which model of G4 laptop you have. The instructions for accessing the airport card vary from model to model - see
http://www.info.apple.com/usen/cip/p...4-12in-apc.pdf for the 12"
http://www.info.apple.com/usen/cip/p...5fw800_apx.pdf for the 15"
(Couldn't find a link for the 17" I'm afraid)
Cheers
