Hello All my Discs are rejected by the Superdrive , i have tried various types of dvds and cds , i have also gone down the route of pram resets disc permissions etc but nothing , i was considering re-installing the entire system but cannot as it will not read any discs , The problem seemed to appear shortly after doing a update ..so this makes me beleive it could be a software problem , oh i also tried to re-install the firmware to its original state apple do a download you then need to burn to a cd and re-install , but yes you guessed it i cannot play cds , it seems all is lost i am annoyed that after saving for ages to buy what i believed was top kit that it hasn,t lasted long at all , and the main reason i bought a mac was to edit and burn my family video,s
Many thanks for reading this
Kevin
ps it appears there are hundreds like me on the apple forums ??

You should determine if the problem is related to software, or simply a failed part:
Restart your Mac, while holding the option key.
You will see 2 arrows, with your hard drive showing as an icon. Insert your restore DVD #1 (one of the grey DVDs that came with your system)
Wait a few seconds, and an icon for your restore DVD should also appear. This tells you that the drive is reading at least some disks. Click on that DVD icon, and press enter to see if your system can boot from that DVD.
If instead of showing that icon, the disk simply ejects again, or nothing at all happens, then your superdrive is likely toast.
If you are still in warranty, or you have AppleCare, Apple will replace your superdrive.
Good Luck!

Thanks Dale for your very prompt reply 2 things this seemed to happen shortly after a update ( was that just coincidence ) and approx how much is a new superdrive + installation , could i install myself ? or would it be a better option to go for a external drive
Thanks once again

Unless you have computer repair experience, I do not recommend trying this your self. It requires pulling the front bezel off, then removing the display inside. The optical drive sits behind the display panel.
Does your drive fail to see any disk, even in the Option-boot screen?

An external will be a cheaper alternative - get a FireWire drive...
