When I try to sign on to yahoo mail I type in my user name and password and hit return. Then yahoo redirects to another page and during the process of loading my safari browser quits with the message "safari has unexpectedly quit" This happens with my Explorer and Netscape browser also.

Please help. I have been to may help sites, tried removing plist files and reset safari. I also used the utility to reset the permissions on my hard drive. Nothing has worked.

HI Rick,

Several suggestions... one, find this file: com.apple.safari.plist Follow this path:
MacintoshHD>Users>Library>Preferences. Open the Preferences folder and locate that file. Drag it to the Trash, then empty the Trash.

Try this also:
Safari Troubleshooting:

CACHE: Empty the Safari Cache by clicking on the Safari menu and selecting Empty Cache

HISTORY: Clear the browser history

PREFERENCES: Delete the file com.apple.Safari.plist located in
/user name/ Library/Preferences

ICONS: Delete the Icons directory from /user name/Library/Safari. The small
icons known as favicons that load in the URL field will no longer be cached.

COOKIES: Delete site-specific cookies by going to Safari>Preferences, clicking the Security tab, and selecting Show Cookies. Remove cookies that correspond to the sites you're having problems with.

JAVA CACHES: Delete your Java caches. Open the application Java 1.4.2
Plugin Settings located in /Applications/Utilities/Java. Click the Cache tab. Click Clear. Repeat this process for Java 1.3.1 Plugin Settins (also located in /Applications/Utilties/Java

RESET: Reset Safari by choosing Reset Safari from the Safari menu. Resetting Safari clears the history, empties the cache, clears the Downloads window, and removes all cookies. It also removes any saved user names and passwords, other AutoFill data, and Google search entries.

Since you are using IE and Netscape and Safari... three browsers can cause incompatibility issues. Once one acts up, it can cause the same with all of them. I strongly suggest since Microsoft isn't writing updates for IE any longer, that you just use Netscape or Safari. There's even a way to Import favorites or bookmarks from IE to Safari in Safari Preferences. Also, you have a Mac so if you are not aware of it, Firefox is a great browser for Macs!!! Here is the link:
http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/

Run Disk Utility and Repair Permissions. Disk Utility is in your Applications folder. That can fix a myriad of problems on a Mac and it should be run at least once a week.

Also, get Onyx. It's a FREEware utility that can delete old logs/caches etc., and keep your Mac running in a stable environment. Here is that link:
http://www.apple.com/downloads/macos...ties/onyx.html

OK.. I hope something I have suggested helps!

Regards,
Carolyn :-)

Thanks for the quick response. I've tried to get my safari going again but no luck so far. Maybe best if I uninstall it and try to re-install it. Thanks for the fire foxtip. That is the only browser that will access my email account with yahoo. Seems ironic to have all 3 broswers quit on the same site and at the same point??? I'm going to try the process again with safari... Maybe I missed something? I don't know if this may help but fetch also quits right after startup???
The problem must be linked between all three??? I hope it does not start affecting Fire fox.

HI Rick,

Fetch quits right after boot? aha! That could be your culprit.
Go to your System Preferences and click on Accounts.
See what items are in the log in window... is Fetch in there?
If so, CHeCK it so it can't load on boot. In fact, CHECK any software that you are having launch on boot automatically so it can't do that for now. You want to boot to a clean Desktop without any applications running.

Drag the Safari app to the Trash, empty the Trash. Then reinstall it from your system CD.

Rick, which Mac OS X are you running? If you aren't sure click the Apple logo top left of your Desktop and then click, "About this Mac"... a window will open and the version number will be there... 10.3.x 10.4.x ?????

Make sure and get Onyx. It's FREE and is a wizard at fixing Mac glitches such as this. Here is the link again just in case: http://www.apple.com/downloads/macos...ties/onyx.html

It wouldn't hurt to take out Netscape and IE out also and reinstall... but if you do this, only install one browser at a time. See if one gives you the same problem. I only keep two browsers. Safari and Firefox. As Microsoft isn't writing updates for IE any longer, it's not up to date with security for Mac users.

Let me know if the start up applications situation helped any!

Sorry about the long delay in response, but my yahoo account was sending the email updates from macosx to a bulk folder.
Anyway, I have been using firefox over the last week and it seems to be fine with accessing my yahoo account. However, I just tried to access my yahoo account with safari and it worked. I also did all of the things you mentioned in the first response. One of those must have been the problem. Fetch was the last application I loaded on to my machine and I also removed it. One other thing yahoo sent me an email in response this problem and they mention they have had similar complaints. I don’t know if the problem was on their end??? I’m running MacOS 10.2.8 , which may be some of the problem too. Otherwise, thank you for the troubleshooting and advice. I tried to go to the feedback link but I receive the following response.

Warning : main(../help/help_feedback.php): failed to open stream: No such file or directory in /home/httpd/vhosts/macosx.com/httpdocs/help/feedback.php on line 4

Warning : main(../help/help_feedback.php): failed to open stream: No such file or directory in /home/httpd/vhosts/macosx.com/httpdocs/help/feedback.php on line 4

Not sure what this means? Otherwise thanks for the quick and very thorough response. I now can access my email on safari again.

Hello Rick,

I am so glad everything is working... at least for the most part. Browsers have so many components that glitches just happen. Hang on to the Safari tips I sent you, as you might need them again.

If you any further assistance, please do not hesitate to repost.

Happy Holidays!
Carolyn :-)
