Your desktop picture should be the same number of pixels as whatever you have set your screen resolution to in your Monitors and Sound control panel. So, if you are running at 832 x 624 (standard for a 17" monitor), your desktop picture should be 832x624 pixels in order to fill the screen without distortion. You can check the size of a picture in an image editing application like JPEGView, GraphicConverter, or Photoshop.
