I am using Max OS 10.2.8 and Apple Mail 1.2.5 (v553) on a Dual 1.25 GHz PowerPC G4. When downloading my e-mail messages from the server, I only get the message header (from, to, subject, date) but the message section comes up blank. I've isolated the problem to Apple Mail because I also run Outlook on a PC and Entourage on my Mac and the same mail comes through fine.

Have you heard of this bug before and how do I fix it without losing my saved mail?

Thanks,
Robert

This problem also occurs in Tiger and the latest mac mail version. If you use IMAP you could erase the mail folder, delete the mail prefs and configure mail all over again (thats what I do at the office). If you use POP you could move all mails to an IMAP account (open an IMAP account i mac mail and drag'n'drop) and open that IMAP account in Thunderbird or Entourage.
I have personally abandonned mac mail and use Mozilla Thunderbird instead.

Thank you for your advice. This is not the only problem I've encountered with Mac Mail since it tends to crash whenever I use the "auto e-mail address lookup" feature and the program connects to my address book.

To remedy the blank message problem, I've deleted the preferences file and then reconfigured the program. This is working for the time being.

I am not familiar with IMAP, but I've read that in order to use it, one needs to have near limitless space on the e-mail Web server (of which I only have 10 MB of storage space with my free godaddy account). Tell me if I'm wrong.

I am interested in the Mozilla Thunderbird option. Does that have the ability to connect to the Mac address book? If not, how to you store your e-mail address and contact info? Is there a way to export address book data?

Thanks,
Robert

You convert the mac adressbook to CSV with the following applescript:
http://hailstonesoftware.com/_files/...BookToCSV.scpt
Then import the csv (comma separated text file) into Thunderbird's adressbook.
Thunderbird also has settings to automatically add recipients to the addressbook.

IMAP keeps all mails at the mailserver. 10 MB is quite a lot if you don't keeps mails with large images and movie files. The free mail accounts does seldom support IMAP, unfortunatelly. If you need larger inbox you should get a free gmail (Google mail) account (2700MB inbox).

To find a free account that supports IMAP; try http://www.vfemail.net/. 15MB inbox and IMAP support.
You could use that to transport your mails to Thunderbird. Set it up for IMAP in MacMail and POP i Thunderbird (don't keep mails at on server). If you have both mail clients active at the same time you just drag and drop mails from your godaddy inbox i MacMail to the VFEMAIL IMAP inbox. Thunderbird will then automatically download then to the inbox and then automatically delete them from the server.
This way you can transfer much more than 15 MB (which is the limit on VFEMAIL inbox). The 15MB inbox is just the transport buffer.

Hello,

I took your recommendation and stopped using Mac Mail in exchange for Thunderbird. Everything works fine except the following functions: print, print preview and page setup. When I select any of these from the menu, I get no response - no dialogue box. I've worked my way through the Thunderbird community support forum and no one seems to have had this problem in the past and no one has responded to my inquiry.

The only thing I noticed is that Thunderbird's release notes say that the system is designed to work on Mac OS 10.3, however it does not say if it is backwardly compatible to 10.2.8, which I am currently running. Any thoughts on how to fix this?

I appreciate your advice.

I use OS 10.4.5 and I also have problems with print preview, I just get a blank dialogue box. I never use the "print preview" function so I havn't noticed the problem before. Sorry, havn't got any ideas of how to fix this.Try the Mozilla Forum page.

The other functions, print and page setup works fine.

Found an easier way to transfer your macmail mails to firefox in Mozilla's support pages:
http://www.mozilla.org/support/thund....html#mail.app

good luck
Magnus
