I have an Apple Studio Display 17" CRT monitor (M6221 ZM/B) which doesn't work anymore.

Symptom: when I power it, the power led button is blinking green and orange. The display stays black, there is no sound (relay click or "electric" sound). Absolutely nothing happen but the blinking led button.

I tried to plug the monitor on a PowerMac G4 MDD, PowerBook "Pismo", PC with an ATI Readon 9800 Pro video card without success: same result. So I guess the problem is from the monitor, not from the Mac video card.

I have the Service Source manual but there is nothing about that inside. I search MacosX.com, Apple and some other forums without finding any hints about the origin of the problem or solutions. Of course this monitor is no longer under warranty...

Do you know what mean the green/orange blinking power led? Is there an easy way to fix the monitor (changing a component or card)? I am quite good at repairing computers and electronic stuffs as long as I know what to do...

I can give you more informations if you have questions to help you to diagnose. Thanks in advance for your answer.

Hi Jean-Charles

Do you have the service manual that shows how to take it apart?
This would show all the parts.

Most likely the Main Deflection and CRT/Video Board Module are bad.

These monitors were known to have this problem, and Apple had a repair policy for them that lasted long after the warranty expired.
Unfortunately, they stopped it about a year ago.
The parts to repair are no longer available.

I had two of these monitors and Apple fixed one of them 2 years ago, the other went bad 6 months later. They told me about the parts no longer being available. I'm guessing they used used parts to fix the first one.

Hi Bob,

Thanks for your fast answer. I think you tell me what I was afraid to hear of... ;-)

Yes, I have the service manual (what is named "Service Source manual") showing how to take the monitor apart along with the parts model numbers. And I see that these boards are the most time consuming and delicate to replace.

I doubt Apple will consider to freely repair my monitor now but I'll try to call them. I never had good service from Apple Canada... But, no one knows...

May be the Main Deflection and CRT/Video Board are still available on eBay or from some repair shop over there (even used ones). I can try to find one but I wonder if it is worth the trouble? I'm not sure which one of them is bad, or both... Do you think it is worth to try to repair this heavy monitor considering 17" and 19" LCD monitors are very cheap these days...

I'm eager to have your advice. Thanks again.

When my monitor 2nd monitor went bad, I just replaced it, didn't think it was worth to try getting the parts since is was from 1999.

I would just get a new monitor. The Dell and Viewsonic monitors are pretty nice.

Check here, dealmac finds some good deals;

Hi Bob,

I totally agree with you. Good LCD 19" monitors can be found under $200 and the Board Module part for ASD is more than $500... It'll be easy to decide what to do... :-)

Thanks again for your kind and prompt help.

Jean-Charles

PS: it is strange that I never received by email the confirmation of my ticket creation nor the notification of your answers. They were not in my junk mail, just never received...
Cheers

The system has been going through some updates and not everything, like notifications have been working correctly.

The site owner is working on any issues now.
