2 Days ago, I tried opening iChat from my dock. It bounced once, but didnt open, and showed a question mark on top of it.
Then yesterday, i tried opening it again after restarting my computer...
The question mark was no longer on top of the iChat symbol, but when i tried opening iChat it didnt open... and the symbol turned into what looked like a peice of paper with the application symbol on top (pencil and ruler)
The same happened with adress book and Photo Booth. When i try to click these 3 things, they just bounce once and dont open...but no error message or anything comes up.
What is happening and what can i do??!

Megan,
First, I need to know what version of OS X you are running. To find this out, go to the Blue apple at the far left of the menu at the very top of your screen.
In the meantime, can you go to Utilities folder and open Disk Utility? If that does open, click on the second icon in the side bar at the left, then click on repair permissions.
When done, quit Disk Utility and give one of your programs a try. Let me know how you do.

im using tiger... version 10.4.11
when you say the second icon on the left... does that mean clicking where it says macintosh HD?? if so, i did that, quit disk utility, and tried opening the programs... they didnt open!
thank you!!

Megan,
Do you recall if you installed something just before this happened?
Try opening a program from the Applications folder rather than the dock. Just go to the Go Menu at the top of your desktop and select Applications. Now give iChat a try.
Let me know if it opens or just ignores you.

i dont think i did download anything new... maybe my brother or dad did on their logins?? The applications dont open on any login not just mine.
I already have tried opening them from the applications folder... same thing as the dock, it ignores me. Now along with the icons for iChat, photobooth, mail, and adress book turning into application icons (they are basically a peice of paper with the ruler/pencil/paintbrush application thing in the bottum corner) when ever i click on photoshop or iWeb question marks come up on top of the icon and they dont open
We have purchased leopard and are planning to open it as soon as we back up our hard drive, do you think they will work once i download leopard??
Cheryl - Jan 19, 2008 - 5:39 pm
Megan,
Installing Leopard now is not a good idea. First, did you make sure your computer can run Leopard? Only the newer models - 867 Mzh will run Leopard.
Let's get your computer working first before you install the new OS. Get out your Tiger 10.4 install disk and start up the computer with it. (insert the disk, restart the computer and immediately hold down the C key) - you may feel that you are waiting a long time to start up with the Tiger disk - that is normal.
Once started (release the c key) select your language(Do not click on the installer screen), then go to the Tools/Utilities menu at the top of the screen.
Select Disk Utilities.
Now click on the second icon in the side bar at the left (Macintosh HD), then make sure you are in the First Aid tab, and click on Repair Drive at the bottom right of the screen.
Watch the activity screen. If it does any repairs - you will need to click on the Repair Disk button a second time after the first pass is done. The object is to make sure it finds all the problems and repairs them. You may need to hit that button a third or fourth time to get no references to repairs made.
Now click on Repair Permissions.
When that is done, quit Disk utility and restart the computer. Now give a program a try to open and let me know how you do.

Megan,
It is time to do an archive install. This will not touch your programs that you have installed nor any of your files. It will install fresh new copies of all the OS's files and programs like iChat.
Start up the computer with the Tiger disk.
Select your language. The Welcome to the Mac OS X Installer window appears.
Click Continue. The Important Information window appears.
After reading or printing the information, click Continue. The Software License Agreement window appears.
After reading or printing the information, click Continue.
An agreement sheet appears. If you agree with the license agreement, click Agree. The Select a Destination window appears.
Click the volume that you wish to install to.
Click Options. The installation options sheet appears.
Select Archive and Install.
Select the volume which already has Mac OS X installed.
You should also select Preserve Users and Network Settings, to preserve network and Home directory settings.
Click OK.
Click Continue to begin the installation.
After restart, go to the Utilities folder and start up Disk Utility to repair permissions.
Now go to System Preferences and select Software Update. Click on Check now. It will show the combo update for 10.4.11 along with a few other program updates and security updates. Allow the install and when done, you will need to restart. After the restart, go to Utilities>Disk Utility and run Disk Permissions.
You should be all set.
You will have a new System folder and a Previous system folder on Macintosh HD. You can trash that previous folder after you have tested all the programs you use to make sure they work.
You will need to reinstall Stuffit Expander and your anti virus if you have one.
Let me know how you do.

my computer wont turn opn. i did everything you said. i restarted my computer. when i logedback on it came up with a gray screen and blinking file with question mark on top. what can i do to turn it on??????
Cheryl - Jan 20, 2008 - 4:03 pm
Megan,
Hold down the on/off button until you hear the start up chimes, then immediately hold down the C key. (I am assuming that the Tiger disk is still in the drive).
When the computer starts up, select your language, then go to the Tools/Utilities menu and select Disk Utility.
Have Disk Utility repair the drive, then repair permissions. Now quit Disk Utility and restart the computer. You can hold down the mouse button to eject the Tiger disk at start up.
Once the disk is out - please check to see that it says Install and not Update or restore.
Keep me posted.
Cheryl

ok i did what you said and it turned on... i took the disk out... what do you mean about install / update or restore?? where should i look to see what it says?? thank you SO much
Cheryl - Jan 20, 2008 - 5:11 pm
Megan,
On the disk itself, it should say if it is update, restore or install somewhere on the printed side of the disk. Update and restore can not do an archive or clean install.
Did Disk Utility do any repairs? Can you start up any programs?
Cheryl
xoballetpinkx3 - Jan 22, 2008 - 6:24 pm
oh ok... the disk says mac os x install disk one
im not sure if disk utility did any repairs... but i guess it did because i can open everything now! now the only problem is that since ive done all of this my printer isnt connected, and the computer can locate it but can add it, so we cant print anything.
also i know you said something about downloading leopard... what did you say again??
thank you so much for everything!
Cheryl - Jan 22, 2008 - 6:49 pm
Megan,
First, let's get the printer working. Go to Home>Library>Preferences. Go to the view menu and select by list. This makes things so much easier to find a file.
Now locate and trash the following:
com.apple.print.PrintCenter.plist
com.apple.print.PrintingPrefs.plist
Empty the trash. Now go to Utilitie>Print Center and delete all printers if they are still listed, then add. Make sure the printer is on and the cables are snug in their ports.
As for Leopard - before you install you need to know if it will indeed run on your computer. There are hardware requirements that you need.
Mac computer with an Intel, PowerPC G5, or PowerPC G4 (867MHz or faster) processor ---- the 867 MHZ processor is important. It will not run on anything less.
512MB of memory
DVD drive for installation
9GB of available disk space
