TICKET ARCHIVE -> Applications Quitting Unexpectedly Os10.2.8

I have an IMac Os 10.2.8. Occasionally the applications will quit. It started with Internet explorer, then Word started to do it. Now, after a few annoying months of learning to save often, I cannot use my mail feature to reply or compose. Each time I attempt to write an e-mail I get a message stating :
The application Mail has unexpectedly quit. The system and other applications have not been affected.
This is the same message that appears when other applications quit.
I have recently downloaded DSL software and have the wireless modem attached to the IMac. However the sudden quitting of applications began before DSL. My screen tends to freeze completely without being able to move the cursor. At other times the swirling icon will prevent any further work from being done for very long lengths of time. When either one of these happens I tend to unplug the computer and reboot. Force quit won't work when the cursor freezes and I cannot close the windows with the cursor or using the keyboard to quit.

I can send e-mails via the server websites, just not from my Mail application in the menu bar. It takes more time and is inconvenient.

Thank you for your help.

Hello, I have 10.2.8 also.

So, have you done any maintenance on your computer? Here's three of the most important programs/steps you need to undertake:
CacheOut (go to www.versiontracker.com and enter 'cache' in the search field to find the program)
Cocktail (go to www.versiontracker.com and enter 'cocktail' to find this program)
Repair Permissions--apps/utilities/disk utility/repair permissions

The first thing should be to rebuild your permissions: apps/utilities/disk utility/repair permissions. This repairs all but the most strenuous mac issues.

Hopefully this will get things moving again on your computer. let me know!

I have the OS 10.2 install disks. If I use these to start (there are 2 of them) will it affect my system running on 10.2.8 which I downloaded over the internet?

As long as you don't reinstall your OS X you're fine. When you boot up, go immediately to the File/Open Disk Utility menu item. Don't reinstall OS X.

I have to go to a wedding all this week so I'll send this question back to open pool so someone else can help you. If this issue is still open when I get back I'll tackle it again, no worries.

Hi Nathaniel,

Thanks for your help. It turns out after doing the things you suggested, I still had problems. I finally broke down and called Apple Support as I have a service package with them ... I thought it had expired. Further investigation lead to a great deal of Data Coruptions that could not be fixd with utility repairs, although I did not try third party repairs. So the end result is not fun. I will have to download to an external hard drive (EHD) all my personal files then re-install OSX and the applications package as well as any other programs that won't transfer to or from the EHD. I haven't done it yet. I just got back from purchasing an EHD with firewire for speed. I was told by a friend that it does not matter which brand of EHD so long as it states its compatible with Mac. After I get back up and going, I'll have to download 10.2.8 since my installation is for 10.2.0. Does all of this sound reasonable to you?

It sounds somewhat reasonable, but unfortunate! Most hard drives can be formatted in OS X for mac no matter what computer they are for, but definitely get one that's made for mac. Then you'll probably just be able to plug and play.

Before you go through the expense, have you created a new user account and tried to duplicate the errors you're having?

I created a new user account as you mentioned. I could not duplicate the errors because the mail box would not respond to the configurations I input. I thought I put in the same adresses and all, apparently not. I am getting ready to donwload everthing to the external drive sometime tomorrow.

Another good thing to do is to delete the preference file of the offending programs (but keep them temporarily on your desktop, just in case in a folder called DELETE THESE).

Go to Library/Preferences and find your mail.app preference file first and move it. Then try to open Mail.
