TICKET ARCHIVE -> Applications Started Crashing On Me!! How Do I "disable Extensions"?

Last week I started getting some application crashes. The only ones I can consistently force to crash are AppleWorks and Quicken 2004.

I don't know when these apps started getting fragile because I don't actually use them that often. But right now, I am using them and they are crashing.

AppleWorks, at the least, will work if I log in under a different username. I have not done the same with Quicken yet. So possibly it's just my own user account that is screwed up.

In ancient times, you could reboot and hold the shift key to disable extensions. Now, under OSX I hardly even know where to look.

Can someone help with with diagnostic practices?

Thanks!

Andrew

Howdy! Perform actions 1-3 in my list below and see if your programs come right. Do them one at a time, and only do the next one if the one before doesn't solve your issue.

1. Repair Permissions: apps/utilities/disk utility/repair permissions
2. Delete the offending program\'s preference file
3. Reboot your computer
4. Zap the PRAM: command + option + p + r

Hi Andrew, I am françois your new volunteer tech,
I am trying to help you, if you want.

well you said :" [applications] will work if I log in under a different username"
that is significant. Your account preferences are corrupted.

open your home folder (in User folder)
go to Library folder, drag Preferences folder to your desktop and log out of your account and relog in.
(I know, at this step your Dock and your desktop are not personnalized, this step is just for testing)

so test your applications (AppleWork and Quicken)
if they work, it is really a account pref cause of your trouble.

at this step tell me results, following steps depends of your answer

if you want temporally your preference, just drag back preferences folder
which is on desktop to your home/library folder (maybe before you must trash new preferences folder automatically rebuild on your Library)

regards,
françois
