Hey,

I have a Intel Imac, OS X Version 10.4.11. And Yesterday it started giving me major probs. I first noticed it was very slow, opening any apps, not just the huge ones like Photoshop. Today it has got allot worse. I try to open any app and they just crash on me, and the quit unexpectedly box comes up, althou that disaapears quickly not even let me look at the reprot, I can not even open up some of the apps in utilites. I have ran the disk utilty, and also done a hardware check from my mac disk, both are fine. I have had a look in my start up, in accounts and taken out all the programs which don't need to be started up, but nothing is helping. I am at a loss at what to do, and now not knowing how to fix it.

Thank you for your time,
Yours Faithfully

Alysia

Hello Alysia

thanks for using macosx.com and I will attempt to assist you.

How much free space is left on the Hard Drive? if it is less than about 10Gb that is a very likely cause as the drive is very full and as a result probably quite fragmented - this means finding space for the temp files, swap space etc. is hard and your Mac will slow down a lot. If space is low have a session making archive copies and deleting stuff, if you are full up with music/photos that you actually use all the time consider buying a big external HDD and moving some stuff onto that.

Do you have Onyx? (or Yasu or Xupport or Cocktail or any of the tools that give easy access to the ability to clean caches, run cron scripts etc?) If not get OnyX free here http://www.titanium.free.fr/pgs/english.html or Cocktail Demo here http://www.maintain.se/cocktail/index.php and run all the cleanup and maintenance stuff

See if any of that helps and get back to me

Thank you so much for your quick answers.
First I have nearly 60gb free, but getting a External HDD is something I have been looking into. A) to free up stroage and b) as backup.

I haves used Both Onyx, and I tried the link you have me, Cocktail Demo and neither have seem to do much at all, intially I thought it looked better, but still apps will not open or hang, the computer is very slow, and seems to take forever to shut down.

Thank you so much for your help,
Alysia.

Alysia

sorry to hear it is not improving much

Unfortunately after having completed a similar problem with another client I have to say that in the end the only real cure seemed to be an Archive and Install Preserving Users and Settings from the Installer Disks and then running the 10.4.11 Combo update... unless you can point the finger of suspicion at something more concrete...
