WEIRD MAN! This place never ceases to amaze me. I thought I would come here and be like, "Yeah, rebuild your desktop." or "Check your SCSI ID" or that kind of stuff.
Ok, I use 8.5's remote access all the time. It's REALLY similair to 8.1's PPP. I don't know what is causing the stupid message. Do a search for ARA in sherlock. If anything comes up in the system folder, trash it. (unless it's a modem script) Come to think of it, there shouldn't be any files besides scripts in the system folder called PPP or ARA...yank any you find.
FreePPP was a good thing. I used to SWEAR by it. I mean, I wouldn't use anything else. The guy even went back and fixed a lot of problems that apple messed up on. I won't even touch an older computer unless it has FreePPP on.
But, for newer computers, I reccomend RemoteAccess.
Go ahead and trash the FreePPP files. Um...I think it's just one extention. Well....don't trash it, just disable it.
See if that helps.
