Hello,
I have a G4 iMac running OS X 10.4.4, and am having a problem getting a line input to play through my external speakers. I go into the Audio MIDI Setup and select my Default Input to be my "Built-in Audio", and my Audio Input source to be "Line In". For output I select "External Speakers".
Now, from what I've read if I want to play the input source through external speakers I need to check the box "Thru" under Audio Input, however I cannot because it is greyed out. Everything seems to be configured correctly... the only thing I'm not sure about is the Clock Source, which also happens to be greyed out. I've searched online a bit and other people seem to have this problem, but I was unable to find an answer anywhere. I can tell the Input is sensing something because under System Preferences > Sound I can see the input level jump around.
With a 3rd perty program such as Rogue Amoeba LineIn, I can "Pass Thru" the audio and it works, but I'd rather not have to run a program everytime I want to listen to my input source.
You help would be greatly appreciated.
TIA,
Mike
Mac OS X comes not with "play thru" ability built in, as did Mac OS 9. Line In is the best and probably the only such utility I know. I suggest you use AppleScript to activate/deactivate Line In when you need it. Attach a keyboard shortcut to the script and you should be good to go, at least a little more conveniently than before. Maybe Play Thru will come to Leopard.
