Any advice on automating the backing up of data to a memory stick would be appreciated. I can manually transfer the data but this seems a very tedious option.

I know exactly how you feel....

I just got a new flash drive, and it came with software that would automatically sync it...what is the brand and model number for your flash drive, just out of curiosity?

If you want a software for the mac, you should try Flash Comet. I never tried it, but it did get good reviews.

Anything else I can do for you?

Thanks for the sympathy and info.
I haven't purchased a dedicated stick yet in case the solution indicated the use of a particular model and am using my Ipod Shuffle.
Since my query I have discovered a freeware backup program from LaCie SilverKeeper which goes along way to solving the problem except so far I cannot get the scheduling to work automatically - something I am doing wrong no doubt!
I will look into Flash Comet - thanks again for your interest and help.
